Last year I took some books to a charity shop and came away with what I thought was a crime story by PD James, from about 1990, The Children of Men. Interesting, if a bit too Christian, about a near future in which no children have been born for 25 years and the human race is doomed.
So this year - surprise - a film of it came out. Really good film, I recommend it. They made some real changes from the film, mostly to make it more topical - it shows a fascist anti-immigrant society.

So, I finished reading the Oufkir bios. The second book "Freedom, the story of my life" tells about Malika's life after her final liberation from house arrest, which followed her prison years (detailed in "stolen lives"). She tells us how she met her husband, her wish to be a mother, taking care of her ill sister's daugther... She tells us about her work, meeting new friends & how she feels an alien after 2 decades in prisons. The book ends with an update as to her family's present life and thank you's to all those who have helped Malika. It's very mooving and doesn't shock as much as "stolen lives" in which Malika detailed the horrible unhumane conditions in prison. I finished reading Malika Oufkir's biography "stolen lives" in which she tells her youth, how she got adopted by morroco's king at age 5 & lived in palaces for 11 years, to be as a sister to the princess. She was educated as a royal, she was treated both with kindess & sever punishments if she'd be too mischevious... She lead a luxirious life including travels and reading as many books as she wanted, she couldn't resign to forget her family and lose her idtentity, like the other women in the royal harem. At age 16, she was granted to go back to live with her family & could profit from a normal life for barely 2 years. Her father - general Oufkir - grew in power & importance in the kingdom, but, fed of corrpution, he attempted a coup, in 1972. As a punishment, he got shot & Malika along with her Mother & siblings and 2 close friends who wanted to accompany her, they were all sent to various prisons, secluded in the desert for months & years at a time, in sever conditions of malnutrition & abuse. Their release didn't come until 1996, after a very long series of adventures, in which the family tried best as they could to stay in touch with one antoher in the cels. Malika had become their mother, teacher & storyteller, to pass the time with which she lost her grip, once out. I'm currently reading the second part " Freedom, the story of my life" , which starts with a long introduction & then, recap of facts, but adds new comments. Will let ya know once am done reading.

After malika's bios, I read a book about Reiki, which seems very interesting and adding to knowledge I'v had already with astrology adn other holistic therapies I'v been studying but adds many details of this particular type of energy therapy. I didn't learn Reiki from the book and it seems "easier" to find a reiki master to learn from, but I do intend to re-read some parts and learn before choosing a master, if I ever do. I read it in its French translation, the author is Paula Horan & the original is "Die Reiki Kraft". Paula also tells a lot about Mikao Usui and how he developed Reiki, which had existed milenia ago already and had been forgotten. Many pictures showing the positions used in Reiki enrich the book

And recently I read Ben Okri's Dangerous Love, a good read if a little depressing.

I'd be interested in having a read of that myself.

tonight i finished reading Véronique Bréger's novel called " en souvenir de demain" which means 'in memory of tomorrow'.
The year is 2488 ; many cataclysms reduced the human population by 80% and changed the face of the world.
During an auction, an American historian, Emma, discovers a manuscript dating from 2004. It tells a love story between a French woman - France Moreau - and a Greek artist - Evridiki Thasseli. Captivated, Emma takes off for Greece, and without her knowledge, ends up in the middle of art trafficking. She visits several islands, meeting different contacts for her research and falls in love with a charming archeologist… This is the first lesbian novel I’ve read, and in spite of one brief scene of food, I absolutely enjoyed my reading. A few erotic and poetic love scenes spice this romantic novel, full of mystery and mythology.
Suspense was good and had to wait for the end to really know what was going on, altho I had developed a few theories early on and I still believe in them…
It seems it wasn’t translated to English, so only the French readers will have access to it, for now…

after that last novel, i went for Annie Proulx's "Accordion crimes". I started it this morning... and ended it this morning.. after the first page had details on how the accordion - the hero of the book is an accordion - was made from animal products such as bones... yack... and how the person had killed the animal to get the rest... made me sick so i stopped... did anyone read this novel ? does it get any better or should i just give up like i did ?
my next novel is Kate Mosse's "labyrinth" ...
