Have you tried the melting cheezly from Redwood? Surely everyone doesn't think that one is awful!? I love it just as it is, or melted on homemade pizza (I cheat though and buy the ready-made bases from Sainsbury's)! My kids also love it on pizza. The cheezly that Redwood used to make before the melting one came out did not melt and were not so nice (they still make the old style ones but I avoid them), and scheese is not quite as nice, but I think it's OK, not as bad as people are saying. I know there was a local vegan group that organised a grand vegan pizza meal a few years ago with their local Pizza Express using the Redwood melting cheezly, cheatin ham ,etc, I heard that almost 80 attended, not all vegan or even all veggie from what I heard, so that brand of vegan cheese goes down well with non-vegans too. I recommend the mozzarella, the edam is quite nice too. In my opinion it would win prizes against cow cheese, but best not to compare if you really like cow cheese taste. Just think of it in its own right. I don't even remember cow cheese very well having been vegan 23 years now, but I don't miss it. I did at first and was delighted when I could get to try vegan cheese! I did accidentally get spiked with a piece of cow cheese (yuk) a few years ago, and it really did not taste better than melting cheezly. I think some other nut butters are nicer than peanut butter, not had any of them for a while, but the health shops often stock other nut butters, I tried hazelnut, almond and cashew. Definitely worth a try for variety. Maybe some vegan substitutes can be an acquired taste, but I found them quite easy to acquire the taste for.

Yeah, it's funny how fake cheese tastes absolutely horrible on its own, but when you mix it in with a pizza base, and evidently make a pizza out of it, it tastes great! So, you're not alone! (if that's even what you were saying?)

Hi everyone, I'm Gogo and I'm a newbie and a new vegan. I've had a massive wake up call since the birth of my daughter nearly a year ago - basically I realised that by eating meat I wasn't living true to my beliefs and that I needed to be a better role model for her. So I went veggie about 9 months ago and now I'm ready to go that step further.
Also as a breastfeeder I've come to see milk as baby food and find it quite weird and grim that grownups want to drink it!
I am looking out for lots of tips on how to make the transition easily especially as I don't know any other non-meat eaters in real life. My husband is a confirmed carnivore! But he is supportive of me all the same... still not sure what to do about my daughter's diet, the health visitor seems to think she needs meat in order to get iron in her diet but so far she seems to prefer lentils and dried apricots!

Hello...I'm not sure how to do this. Er - I became a vegetarian 3 or 4 years ago. I was a pretty negligent vegetarian, and totally inconsistent, for example, I wouldn't eat stuff made with bovine gelatine, but still I bought leather shoes...duhh In late Dec.\ early January '08 I finally stepped away from the hipocrisy inherent in vegetarianism. My eldest brother bought me a vegan cook book for xmas and since then I've been making more food than I ever did. It is rockin. Especially the soup. I found EV through that page in Vegan With A Vengeance, hurray! don't wanto go on too long, oh dear...anyways, I'm the only vegan in my family, and despite my mum being generally caring re: my health, she's...well, anti-vegan. We argue sometimes and we both end up getting upset. I don't know any vegans. My gal is vegetarian, and I love her so much! she's the best! I kind of wish she would go vegan, but it doesn't bother me a great deal.
I look forward to stuff and things. I don't know what to put

Hey gogo and harmonycorruption. Your daughter sounds v. sensible already gogo, a lentil lover from birth!! Don't worry about your mum harmony, she'll be fine if you can reassure her about the health issues. And if you bake her some vegan cakes that will probably help too! Once your girlfriend gets used to your veganism, and if you eat meals together a lot, maybe she'll come round to the idea herself.

next time I will avoid argument and just say "what is extreme about eating vegetables?"
I made my first vegan chocoloate cake (recipe from Isa of PPK), but forgot to put the cider vinager in! I got it in after removing it from the oven, but it ended up being a little dodgy

hello I'll say my introduction properly now
I've been vegetarian all my life, and I knew being vegan was the right thing to do since I heard it existed. I deliberately didn't think too deeply about it to allow myself to believe what my mum told me, that cows *had* to be milked and we was helping them etc but common sense told me it wasn't true.
I first tried to go vegan when I was 9, when I couldn't push the truth to the back of my mind any more. I knew being just a vegetarian was contributing to cruelty. But I failed, no one took me seriously because I was a kid.
For the next couple of years I pushed it to the back of my mind again, convinced veganism was a really extreme diet and not possible for someone who leads a normal lifestyle. I had about 3 or 4 serious attempts since then. I lasted months sometimes then failed as I didn't know the alternatives, I was just cutting out things. On my final failed attempt, age 15 when I gave up by eating a hot buttery cheesy pitta bread, I thought I would be relieved as I tucked in but I felt hollow and a failure.
Finally, I succeeded, I've been a vegan now for 10 or 11 months,(and part vegan for about 21 months) and for 7 months of that gluten free too! So I know now it's *not* extreme, I got a varied diet. The discovery of Udo's Oil made it much easier for me, as I can use it on toast and peas and stuff, I don't like vegan butter that much. I know for a fact I'll never touch animal food again and will be a vegan forever, it's so easy now=]
I went vegan for animal rights and environment reasons and also because it's better for you

*waving* Hello all, I'm Kelly Ann. I'm 23, I've been vegetarian since I was 14 and a vegan since Monday morning! It just makes sense now, I see it as a natural progression but I've been looking for a place to learn and interact and this forum just struck me as intelligent, helpful and not too daunting.
Nice to meet you all. I look forward to furthering my education and having a bit of an animal-free giggle.

Hi, my name is Liz, i live in leeds with my lovely veggie, almost vegan partner and three rescue cats called daisy, poppy and lucy.
I have been veggie for 14 years, and have decided that 2008 is the year to go vegan! I love this forum as it has finally kickstarted me into all things vegan.
all i have to do now is convince my mum that a vegan wedding will not be the embarassment she thinks it will!
