Hi, this is my introduction. I'm Denise and live in North Yorkshire with hubby and my two youngest children, my daughter has one of her own so I'm a Nanna Moo too. I been on quite a dietry journey, but basically I worked in the meat industry from leaving school up until I was 28 and really that should have been enough to put me off meat for life. 7 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare slow growing cancer and realised my diet wouldn't exactly help so we went organic, cut out all the chemicals from day to day living and went dairy free too After a while, cheese started to come back into our diet and noone could stand the taste of soya milk on their cereal so milk came back into the house although only ever organic dairy Anyway our new lifestyle meant that all my results had been stable for 2 1/2 years. In March last year I cut out all meat and was only have fish a couple of times a week and spurred on by the fact all the sludge had gone from my gall bladder and spending a bit of time with some veggies, I went veggie in June last year. My brother announced he was going vegan in December and I (having had a problem the dairy industry for a long time) said I would join them. I do however still have the occasional egg from my friends chickens who I know have a very happy life and are only fed organic grain. So I describe myself as virtually vegan My oldest son 9 wanted to watch the recent programs about the chicken industry and joined me there and then and because his brother liked the look of the sausages decided he wanted to be 'half vegan' but I have taken that to mean I can feed him the same as his brother. So now my hubby is the only omnivore left in the house, but he's a dairy/egg free omni (well when he is at home anyway) Well that's us, the Wobbly family and looking forwward to getting to know you all better Denise

Hi Denise. Nice to meet you. I hope your new diet helps with your health. It's great that your brother and sons are making the same journey with you. It's always easier to make the transition when you have support from others in the family.

Thanks puffin. Hi wobblymoo, that is so interesting that you were once involved in the meat industry and are now vegan! I bet that is quite unusual. Glad to hear that the diet is helping your illness, I hope you are feeling well and make a full recovery x

Thanks for the welcome I feel wonderful, even more so as hubby has just converted too. To be honest with working with meat, the best thing is it has always made me question what I am told. The more I change my lifestyle the more my thoughts change and I become less brain washed by society and the 'norm' . Denise

thanks Puffin. hi wobbly moo, glad your feeling better, great hubby joined in too. i like Rice Dream its a good milk alternative. hi everyone here.please take a look at these whale petitions and sign them. i think the canon one is very important in the fight to stop whaling, we need to hit them where it hurts, in the pocket and tell them we wont buy their products, then they may tell their government to stop whaling. www.greenpeace.org/international/ click take action to send an already written letter to Canon, you could add that you will not buy canon products cos of the whale and dolphin slaughters. and www.wspa.org.uk/news.asp?newsID=500 oh and this one for uk wildlife to ban snares in Scotland www.bansnares.com

Hi everyone,Im Moon and ive just joined this forum.Ive joined cos I feel like I need a little bit of support/advice as I feel like a failure! why you ask?? this is my story.......One day I was walking threw my town center when I met a young woman asking for donations,I asked 'what is it for?' She said"its for the animals' So being an animal lover I gave her what change I had,she then directed me to more of her friends at a stall,to my horror they showed me stuff about animal testing!!! I was discusted to find that most everything I bought were tested on animals.from that day I change everything I owned and turned my house into a none tested house.I felt I needed to more about this so I joined viva! who sent me loads of info, but after reading stuff about factory farming I decided to go veggie,my whole life change, I felt great!! So why do I feel such a failure? Ive been veggie now for over a year and have decide to go vegan(because of the cruelty of the dairy and egg industry) but i am finding it more difficult then i thought.I wont lie,I really like the taste of cheese and cant find a good tasting substitute,so I keep failing, not often, but now and again I do.Can anyone give me advice?? Pleasssse.

I can't help with finding a good cheese sub because most of the cheese subs I've tried have been horrible.
The tofutti cheddar style slices are decent enough for a sandwich and the cheezly mozarella makes a decent toastie.
My advice is to not bother trying to replace it and experiment with other foods instead, you won't miss it for long! I really thought I'd hate pizza without cheese but I actually really like it.

I agree with Sal. They're not too bad if smothered in Branston Pickle or something similar, but they're never going to win any prizes in a contest against regular cheese. Try experimenting with other stuff in your sandwiches - houmous, peanut butter and jam, sliced bananas and strawberries, avocado and dressing... there's so much other tasty stuff to play with. You'll find it easier with time, and "fail" less frequently, so be don't be too down on yourself. You'll get there.
