As a lot of people know, conventional medicine is not the answer to all problems, with alot masking the symptom, rather than the root cause.
Post here about your experiences, or whether you have found alternative medicines/therapies such as naturopathic medicine, herbalism, homeopathy, reiki, yoga and any others and if you have found them beneficial to you or others you know.

I am a firm believer of alternative medicine, as without it and if I had listened to conventional allopathic doctors, I don't believe I would be here today. Basically last year after stepping on some metal, which the doctors were unable to fully remove. I became seriously ill shortly after and spent a long time in and out of hospital with some very nasty side effects that the doctors couldn't work out what caused it. After blood tests showed high levels of heavy metals that were leeching from my foot and literally poisoning me, I sought the help of a naturopath who has me on a gentle "chelating" programme to remove these metal, plus an excellent diet full of antioxidants, homeopathic remedies and herbs and within weeks I showed big improvements. Unfortunately this has left my immune system a bit week so am currently having a few probs fighting a sinus and ear infection at the moment, and sadly have had to resort to antibiotics, although am on the 3rd course now! But as a rule of thumb, I believe prevention is better than cure. Having this illness inspired me into having a career change and am currently on a part time basis training to be a naturopath. I use yoga as a cleansing tool and to relax and am looking forward to starting my Reiki Level 1 this Saturday, which I will post more about after.

That's a startling story Tiggerwoos. Are you near the coast? I used to work in a lab, and I spilled some hot nitric acid on my foot. It left a hardened spot on my skin that lasted for several years until I started to spend a lot of time beach combing and walking in the ocean water in my bare feet. The lump softened, got kind of red and festery, and then healed completely without a scar. I was amazed, as I had not the slightest idea that this would happen. There is something very healing about ocean water, I guess.
In response the question in the title, I have spent my life studying alternative healing. I was brought up in a religion that does not believe in using doctors and modern medicine, and though I do not follow it, I don't go to the doctor either! I am a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to my health, and I never have any problems. If I am in an accident and some part of my body is hanging from a string I will go to a doctor, but I don't think they are any good at understanding chronic disease, or situations like your metal poisoning.

Hello everyone.
Indeed, quite a starteling story Tigegrwoos. Feet do hurt a lot... Metal poisoning isn’t a joke, it’s quite serious I believe. I don’t hear about such cases too often.
What I do see is a positive change in your life ; re-direction in your career. Also, a positive approach to your healing process that you undertook with the help of nature, not agaisnt it. I totally agree with you, prevetion is better than cure & cure with nature as a first choise, leaving the convention medicine as last resort option.
If you need, I’ll recheck my lists for herbs that help healing sinus & eat infections. There are a few that help the immune system so i can tell you next time too, if you need.
What’s that 3rd course you talk about ? am not familiar with this term in regard to antibiotics...
You too, Fauxmage have told us quite a story here ! Maybe the salty thin in the ocean water is beneficial, or maybe other elements... either wya, water is promordial & healthy – when it’s not a bad one that is LOL...
To answer my part as well, I’v been into herbal medicine for most of my life... over 2 decades. I am agaisnt the conventional one for many reasons, one of them are the tests on animals that continue even nowadays... it’s shocking & horrific ! I never liked them even tho i had to resort to allopathic docs long ago...
Now, i usually see the doc to know what i got & then treat with herbs... i rarely use any pills.. last was was before i turned vegan... almost 3 years ago !
Last year, I read a book about colour therapy, it’s really interesting, confirming , adding & expanding my knowledge, part of which I’v gained through astrology.
I also wanted to learn Reiki but haven’t gotten the chance to do so yet... soon, perhaps... I’d love to hear your new experience with it, Tiggerwoos and maybe rekindle my sparkle toward studying it as well.
Untill next time, take care & cya’ll soon

Ouch! That sounds painful Fauxmage, nitric acid..... ewww! Salt water I agree is a great cleanser and healer. It has an amazing drawing power and with the correct type of salt eg rock salt, which is harnessed from the ocean it has an uncanny ability to alkalise the body and help draw out toxins, which is why its so good with auto immune problems such as rheumatoid arthritis. I use alot of epsom salt baths as part of my treatment and find them a great help...... also good if anyone has overdone it excercising too!
I know what you mean about doctors not understanding metal poisoning. They were at a loss as to what to do with me, which is how I got into the field of medicine.
Hope you're OK now after the nitric adid incident?
Veganwabbit, you're right about my accident which gave me heavy metal poisoning bringing on a career change. I believe everything happens for a reason and I'd been stuck in a rut for ages with my job and didn't know what to do, so now by doing all these alternative medicine courses, I'm on the way to that. Thanks for the tips about the ear infection. I tried everything I could think of mullein, teatree and something else drops, white vinegar and alcohol, plantego, silicia, hepar sulph, but sadly it didn't want to clear so was infuriated when I had to resort to the antibiotics. Anyway it seems to be nearly gone and I'm sure this reiki has a big part to play in it as I do a self healing treatment every night.
I'd thoroughly recommend you or anyone else to be attuned to at least Reiki I level. I must admit I was very skeptical at first, but after Saturday's experience that definitely changed!

Ive never really used any alternative medicines. I never take painkillers. Even after my operation, I didnt have any. Im not saying I wouldnt obviously if I were in agony. I usually abstain. Last summer when I was exhausted from doing long hours in my various jobs I stupidly just kept going and exercising like a maniac too. Then at the end of the summer I had to have (another!!) operation on my tongue which has a large venus malformation on it. I was so exhausted that my recovery was twice as long.

I had a manual lymphatic drainage massage today from my naturopath. She said she felt alot of fluid over my eye, sinus and facial area, where I have experienced all the pain from this sinus and ear infection I've had and has got that moving a bit more, as she said that the lymph seemed to be stagnating in the area.
She's also got me doing my rebounding again (trampolining) a couple of times a day as I lapsed as that as that's good at getting the lymph and circulation going and has ordered me a load of lymphatic herbs and blood purifying herbs, so hopefully that should help.
She said that the reason I've had so much pain in my eye is that this cyst I've had for ages in one of my sinuses was probably aggravated and enlarged by this infection I've had and is pressing on my optic nerve.... ouch!
Hopefully I'll get the stuff tomorrow, but the massage was so relaxing I fell asleep!

Echinacea is a great immune booster Garlic (raw if you can stand it!) is good for colds Salt is great for ulcers Lavender oil is great for headaches Chamomile oil is great for stress Oh and its not medicine but anyone wanting an ethical harmless way to discourage spiders from coming into the house should try sprinkling clove oil where the spiders come in! It doesn't harm them, they just hate the smell I don't know much about alternative medicine, although I should learn being as I refuse to take drug medicine. I'm horrified by my girlfriend taking paracetamol all the time for headaches, I'm sure its bringing them on-vicious circle. I was diagnosed with clinical depression for a couple years when I was younger and was offered a range of Glaxosmithklines best. I refused strangely!

So that's how it happened Tiggerwoos Considering my own experiences of the mainstream specialist and doctors and what others have encountered too, I tend to feel much of what the patient (statistic) is told can be guesswork/bluff!

I got some Olbas oil yesterday, Tigger. I haven't any need of it at the moment, but it sure smells good.

MMMmmm. Love olbas oil. Was using that quite a bit in a steaming bowl of water with a towel over my head for my sinuses. Now I often stick it in my oil burner and burn the oil. Makes the whole house smell lovely.

Tiggs, for your sinus troubles, have you tried putting your head in different positions? You could sit with it dangling down between your knees, or lie on your front, side or back, with it dangling over the edge of the bed. It might help to get the blockage moving under the influence of gravity. Gravity can be useful. I'm glad that Newton invented it.

Thanks Glionrach, I will try that. Luckily, touch wood my sinuses haven't been too bad recently, just a bit stuffy, but I really want to go back to swimming, but am too scared now, as this is how the whole problem started......... A simple case of swimmers ear, which spread to the outer ear, then inner ear, then sinuses and wouldn't budge and a bit scared of going again after 5 or 6 weeks of that!

I haven't been swimming for years. I wouldn't go the baths because the wet floors and poolside are breeding grounds for athlete's foot, and the pool is full of bodily fluids and chlorine. I won't swim in the sea - it's an open sewer. The only places I would swim would be a clean lake or a big pond.

I know exactly what you mean. There is no point going swimming in a public facility if it is going to make you ill.
I am a member of a private gym, which is although looks cleaner and newer than your standard pool, obviously doesn't make any difference! What I hate about public pools is the fact that so many have the changing rooms right by the poolside and you get mums wheeling their buggies that have been in the street right by the pool......... Heaven for bacteria and germs.
As for the sea I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Don't think I've been in the sea since I was about 5 or 6..... over 20 years ago. It's just asking for trouble!
On a plus point, over the last week I have actually enjoyed exercising outside, rather than being in a gym with the cycling and running as the time flies by and have seen so many lovely things, such as the deer, the falcon and beautiful scenery.
The only time I go to the gym now is for my weekly yoga class.

The first time i used Homeopathic medicine was 5 years ago- I was 12 years old, having just moved to a new area, started a new school, and i managed to get impetigo within a week. Due to the incessant bullying, i had to take time off school whilst it healed; i was given courses of antibiotics and steroids by the doctor, neither of which worked, so after about a month of sitting at home with the delights of daytime T.V, my mum took me to a natural medecine clinic that a colleaugue of hers works at- the echinacea i was prescribed cleared it up within a week..

I had impetigo a few years back. I made a tea of goldenseal and put that on the sores throughout the day. They went away. Ginger is good for circulation. When I was younger Mom always gave me a piece when I was getting sick and I would feel better right away. It's awesome for the immune system, as well as garlic and echinacea. Feverfew is useful for headaches. Peppermint tea for stomach upsets, and dill for aiding digestion. There are many things! I'll post more later

Had a "Manual lymphatic drainage" massage today from my naturopath as my injury the other year left me with some problems and my lymphatic system is very sluggish now (hense my stoopid ear and sinus aches at the mo...... Again) and nearly fell asleep, which was a shame as I had to go to work afterwards.
Had a brill consutation with her also and she's such a knowledgable and optomistic person and gave me a load of tips and advice.
Have gotta get back on my rebounder tomorrow to bounce my lymphatic system back into life!
