This is a question from a newbie trying to get my head around all this stuff!
Do you or would you ever swat an insect?
What about mosquitoes for example? They can be quite dangerous if you let them hang about.
I recently swatted a big fly that was buzzing around my bedroom keeping me awake at night. Then I was kept awake anyway by my sense of guilt!
I do have quite a phobia of insects, especially flying ones, but I still don't want to hurt them. I just want them away from me!
What do you do? Live and let live unless they are causing a real problem? Is there a 'humane' way of dealing with insects?

I hate anything that buzzes around me - even houseflies (cos of that space 1999 episode where the woman turns into a fly and goes into an android's ear). Mostly it's just things that bite or sting that bother me most.
Anyway I just catch them and put them outside if I can, or try and ignore them.

I need one too. The Home I work in gets quite a few whopping great spiders and the carers all just stomp on them I will get a glass and a bit of paper and put them outside, but it would be nice to have a specific tool for the job I dont swat flies any more. I used to before I was vegan. I hate wasps with a vengeance, but just stay out of their way these days.

I don't swat them no. I'd never kill a spider, even though I'm terrified of them. I haven't seen any yet in the flat. I'm hoping that they won't like it here and stay away. If they don't I'll have to buy a spider catcher!

My new Bug Buster arrived today! It is fantastic with a really long reach. I am so happy with this invention. The suction is very light though, so it doesn't damage the insects, but I'm wondering if it's a bit too light?
I actually want my home to be invaded now so I can try it out! I'll let you know how I get on...

I have one of those katcha bug utensils and they are the world's best invention. I have taken so many spiders out of my house with one of those it's amazing.
I would never be cruel to any insect. Just catch them in the bug catcher and take him outside and set him free.

The spider catchers are great (unless, like us, you have spiders too big to fit into them!) but someone told me that house spiders die if you put them outside

Apparently a centrally heated house in the winter isn't good for them either - it's too dry. Putting them in the cellar, or a shed or somewhere sheltered would be best I think. Of course they probably only come back in again, anyway. A nice warm, moist bed is what they really want

You could always post them through a neighbour's letterbox.

I completely and %100 disagree with you. If no one killed flies, the world would be over run with them. Have you ever seen a sheep with flystrike?! Our sheep have had it a few times, including my pet ram Ollie. Flies lay eggs in their wool and the eggs hatch and become hungry little maggots that chomp into the sheep and cause hours of agony and even death if not treated. We get a lot of flies here because it is dairy country. Even now there is a heck of a lot of them on the roof!! Wasps too are awful and we get 3-6 in our house each day! However I do think that they feel pain. But they cause pain too. But I never hurt bees, spiders, worms or anything like that.

Every fly you put outside instead of killing is another fly that will lay hundreds of eggs that will hatch into hundreds of flies that will torture hundreds of animals. Which do you think deserves the compassion, the animals or the flies?

Sheep have been bred to have too much skin. More skin equates to more wool equates to more profit. Nature left to its own devices would find a balance. Doubtless humans are responsible for reducing the population of the flies' predators by, for instance, clearing scrub, trees, etc, to graze cattle.

Well its too late now so we have to kill flies otherwise its sheep suffering. And Tabitha if everyone kills flies they won't die out. There will always be flies but a lot less would be wonderful.

Why not kill the farmers, too? They cause the sheep suffering, what with tail docking, mulesing, selectively breeding, slaughtering, live exports, etc. I presume, given your justification for killing the flies, you only kill the species responsible for flystrike?

I diagree with all that cruelty to sheep as well. Mulesing, slaughtering, live exports. We don't even dock our sheep. They use their tails to swish the flies away. And no we kill all kinds of flies. Sometimes our place is crawling with flies. Just imagine if we didn't kill them.

Yeah, things are different over there I guess. I went to Australia once. Flies, bugs, spiders that jump. Yuk! I was vegan then (only just) and I couldnt sleep in the bedroom til my ex husband had turned mass murderer and disposed of them all in a very unveganly manner I havent seen a fly all year in our house. Nothing buzzy actually.
