This is pretty awful but I really don't want to take antibiotics if it can be avoided. I can feel loads of flem in my chest. Will this go away on its own or is there anything natural that will help?

i have been suffering the same as you, maisie. I have just been and bought 'vegetable cough remover' from the health food shop (comes in a bottle with a green + yellow label. I used it a few years ago and it was very good.

You could eat lots of immune system boosting foods. Keep warm (even if it means you feel sweaty) and rested, drink plenty of fluids.
Eat lots of: Mango, kiwi, avocado, bananas, carrots, cantaloupe melon, blueberries, tomatoes.
You shouldn't need to visit the doctor. Your immune system should be able to cope, even if it takes a little while, and it will be stronger for it. Do see a doctor if it gets worse, though.
Paracetamol will help you feel a little better (though won't actually heal you) if absolutley necessary.

If you have asthma or any other chest/heart problems you should see your doctor maisie. If not it will probably go away by it's self if you, as pob says, eat lots of immune stystem boosters. Drink LOADS of water to loosten the mucus... try steaming over a bowl of hot water with something like olbas oil in it (although there are better oils out there). Make sure you keep spitting any mucus up to help clear the lungs and chest. Stay away from caffine as it blocks the absorbtion of either vit C or Iron (I can't quite remember which but they work better together). You could try taking vitamin C, zinc & echinacea together to try and shift it. This site has some more information www.organicnutrition.co.uk/articles/colds.htm. Hope you feel better soon petal, make sure that you get plenty of rest even when it's lifted to avoid any lasting trouble *big soothing hugs*

...... try steaming over a bowl of hot water with something like olbas oil in it... Try some tea tree oil in the steaming water, Maisie. That stuff really does have the ability to dissolve mucous. And, if you like hot pepper, put some cayenne pepper in some broth or soup, as much as you can stand. This breaks up mucous too, but only use it if you are already used to hot spices. Its too strong for people who aren't used to it, or don't like hot stuff. I hope you get better soon.

I always get bad chest problems and a sore throat after being in any outdoor area where there are crowds and I keep getting exposure to cigarette smoke (obviously I would never set foot in an indoor place that allows smoking, have been strict about this for many years now not only out of choice but out of necessity). Not sure if it is an infection or just that I am sensitive to smoke which is a very bad irritant. I know it could well have weakened my immunity so it would be an infection. I'm going mad with the Olbas pastilles and Airwaves chewing gum, since Monday when we had the foolishness to visit a fairground, I was always having to dodge smoke, and I've felt rough ever since! These things help a bit. I've also been advised that if you also have a sore throat gargling with red sage or using tincture of myrrh is good (can't get hold of those things at short notice though).

some good advice I use citricidal which is grapefruit seed extract for coughs & colds it works fast - simply put a few drops in juice 5 times a day use it to gargle & clean your toothbrush with its good as it wont hurt your immune system its also anti bacterial, anti biotic, antifungal & can be sued as a cleaner to without nasty chemicals more info on its uses www.alternativesoles.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AS&Product_Code=HN01&Category_Code=VCthe other thing I use when I get ill is EFT - emotional freedom technique - a friend taught me this and I really didnt think it would work but it helps to get rid of colds, upset stomaches & lots of other problems - try www.emofree.com/ for a video of what it can do avoid buying the dvd as there are free manuals on his site others a good nlp trainer wont charge much and well worth the half hour
