Wasn't gonna post this but then I would feel like a fake if I didn't. Last night when my husband was out working I scoffed a whole huge bar of cadburys chocolate (that was his fathers day present) then today I ate loads of my dads chocolate. Bloody hate myself now Has anyone else given into temptation like this? or am I the only one, Grrrrrrrrr I hate myself, I hope I get food poisoning

Don't worry Chickpea, you're a new vegan. I know I cheated in the first few weeks. I even went back to vegetarianism after 2 years of being vegan and didn't go vegan again for about 5 years! It was very brave of you to own up.

Yeah chocolate can be a problem especially if people around you are eating it. When I first went vegetarian 12 years ago I wanted to go Vegan straight from being a meat eater but realized as I didn't really know any veggies let alone vegans I would just phase out the dairy products gradually and went completely vegan 6 months later.
Like Tabs says Don't beat yourself up.

Don't let a little mistake put you off. It will get easier with time. Especially if you take the precaution of filling your house with stockpiles of vegan chocolate. It's also a good idea to cunningly hide bars in the houses of people you visit in case the urge comes on you when you're away from your regular stash. ;D

I agree with the previous statements, you're a new vegan & it takes time to build in the habits related to eating only vegan. To each their path & speed It is a good idea to have stacks of vegan chocs around so you don't have the temptation too often. Don't beat yourself up & move on to be more vegan tomorrow learn from today's mistakes for a better future ;d

chickpea, i agree with what everyone else has said. Today is a new day and it does get easier with time.
I never had a problem or temptation with food, but for a while after being vegan i used to slip up with alcohol. particularly if drunk and ended up buying rounds with friends i often never knew what lager i was drinking when someone else bought a round.

We've all made mistakes. And milk chocolate can be a hard habit to break.
Like maisie it took me a few goes over several years to truly get the hang of veganism.

Good advice about having a good stash of vegan treats around the place. Don't forget to have ice cream, Swedish Glace choc ice on a stick things, and burgers/nut cutlets around at this time of year, too. Alpro chocolate or caramel desserts are good for hitting the spot when an urge for something sweet takes hold, and you don't have to feel too bad as they are a source of calcium.
If you find yourself fed up of strong dark chocolate, and yearning for the milder taste of milk chocolate, get hold of some Plamil bars or Supermarket Dairy Free choccy bars. All of the Plamil bars are fairly mild. Dairy free bars generally aim to taste similar to milk chocolate.
Also, it might be useful to remind yourself why you don't eat dairy by reading articles or watching videos about what's wrong with dairy.

I think it is a really bad idea to have a stash of vegan chocolate around the house. I think it is an even worse idea to have a stash of chocolate deserts around the house. THAT. IS. WHY. I. AM 40 STONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and have to be bound and gagged and have the fridge padlocked.

Actually yes that is a good point Tabs, why o why did chocolate have to exist? it torments me.
Pob, I have told myself that if I go anywhere near something I shouldn't then I will watch Earthlings again and that'll kill my cadburys chocolate craving in a second.

I remember watching Paul McKenna talking about cravings in relation to dieting but his advice would work for this also. Imagine eating dairy milk chocolate mixed with slugs. Feel the sensations of the squishy slugs in your mouth along with the sweet chocolate taste as you chomp down on the slug and it bursts, filling your mouth with its bitter juices mingled with the chocolate. Do you still want some chocolate?

I've actually made myself feel quite sick as well but it works doesn't it ;D You can imagine eating anything disgusting mixed in with the food you crave. Its important to mentally imagine the tastes and textures. Try hair from the plughole, eyeballs, snot and MEAT!!!!

I'm not sure it's such a good idea to remind oneself why dairy is bad by imagening eating it with disgusting things... in my opinion, veganism isn't about being forced to not eat this & that, but a choice. Maybe I think this way because being vegan is easy & natural for me ? or because I'm extremely sensitve & thus don't need imagery to remind myself ? I guess to each his/ her way

n my opinion, veganism isn't about being forced to not eat this & that, but a choice. Maybe I think this way because being vegan is easy & natural for me ? For me too. The very thought of putting an animal product in my mouth makes me feel sick and I only use that method for dieting. I don't have the slightest desire to eat anything non-vegan but some vegans still yearn for the taste of certain non-vegan 'foods' so for them, this method might be useful.
