does anyone know a site where there are a list of ingredients derived from insects because technically insects aren't mammals so they dont fall under the category of hidden animal ingredients i think....

Some of you probably know this anyway, but I was shocked today to read that apples and other fruit are often coated in shellac (E904), which is an insect secretion. Due to the harvesting methods, it may contain crushed insects as well as their secretions. Who would have thought apples may not be suitable for vegetarians? The World's gone mad. I'm glad I buy organic.

And citrus fruits are coated in beeswax And some fruit juices are clarified with gelatine. I only buy organic fruit because of that.

God damn it all. My disgust with the food industry in general just quintupled. Does anyone know any of the brands which are known to be safe, and vice versa? It's virtually impossible to get good organic fruit+veg in winter (which is about 2/3ds of the Icelandic year), and even in summer they're rare and expensive. Oh well. I guess this is just another challenge in my path to the perfect lifestyle.

They're not allowed to add any crap to organic fruit, it makes it not organic. I buy organic fruit where you eat the skin. If I can't get organic I would scrub the fruit with hot water and washing up liquid to remove all traces of skankiness.

Some citrus fruits (usually the organic ones) are labelled as unwaxed. With apples, I guess you should just try to avoid any suspiciously shiny ones if you can't get organic.

Yeah, all organic citrus fruit I've seen has been labelled as unwaxed, but I've never seen a non-organic orange that wasn't waxed.

Oh my goodness- the price of being vegan goes up and up with every bit of info you find. I'm absolutely disgusted at this. will have to shell out for organic now. Thanks for the info.
