At the risk of banging on about New Zealand *looks over his shoulder for Geoff* Kaikoura used to be a major whaling centre on the South Island.
However, now the town is much more prosperous and one of the most successful local businesses is the Maori owned and run whale spotting company.
These guys are good. They use serious technology to find the whales and have state of the art boats, but their trade doesn't hurt a single whale. And they really put a lot of effort into education about the sperm whales that you mostly see round there.
Thats what whaling should mean, if you ever go there make sure you take a trip with them.
