Firefighters used an inflatable canoe to rescue a puppy which became trapped on a canal bank in Liverpool. A member of the public called Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service after spotting the dog trapped 6ft (1.8m) down, near the Heritage Market. Firefighters paddled in the canoe to the black mongrel to bring it back from the water's edge safely. Gary Leith, from the rescue team, said the puppy was "quite distressed but rescued unharmed".
