Thursday morning we got woken up at 6am by Desmond, our 18 year old border collie cross lab thrashing and banging around the bedroom. Thinking he was uncomfy or needed a wee, we let him out in the garden, but prior to that he got up and fell down the flight of stairs.
Anyway he got out in the garden and was swaying and collapsing like a drunkard and when we finally got him in very frightened, he just wanted to sleep. Our first thought was he had had a stroke and was probably going to be his last day. So he had a nap and we "tried" to get some sleep, checking up on him at the foot of the bed and rushed him to the vet when it opened in the morning.
It turns out luckily he has Canine Vestibular Disease which affects the nervous system and is common in old dogs. Basically with anti sickness pills for a week he should learn to control his reactions and lead a normal life. He's improved ten fold in the last day and a half, although taking him for a walk, he gets very confused and dizzy and keeps going round in circles to the right and forgetting where we are.
Poor old mite, bless his heart.
