for my birthday my parents adopted Bwambale for me via www.bornfree.org.uk/index.shtml . Bwambale's poignant story , Born in late 1999, Bwambale was just a baby when he was disocvered by a kindly old man in a sugare plantation in Kasese, western Uganda, clutching his dead mother's bofy. he was kept as a pet for two years, but did not fare very well and became pale and lost his hair. The man became worried and decided to contact the Ugandan authorities for help. But not everyone is as responsible as the old man. And sadly there is a flourishing illegal trade in baby chimps and other wild animals. But wild animals belong in the wild and never make good pets. When people buy an endagered baby chimp they don't realise how difficult it will be to care for them and how quickly they become unmanageable. Happily Bwambale was rescued in August 2002 and brought to the Chimp Sanctuary. At 1st he was very scared and hugged his feet for comfort which suggests he was not held much as a baby. But his health rapidly improved in the sanctuary's nursery and today he loves to play and have fun with the other baby chimps. Although he is the smallest in the group, he is now one of the most confident and all the others love him. 'Bwambale' means 'second born' in Lukonjo, as he was the second chimp ay Ngamba confiscated from the Kasese area. He will always rely on human care , but he now has the opportunity to become part of a true chimp community in the islands beautiful forest habitat.
