Are there any experienced fish people out there? One of my goldfish who is about 4 years old seems to be about to peg it. For the last year or so, very occasionally he had balance problems, but was once in a blue moon, but today he has gone upside down. I've spent the whole evening, putting him in a quarrantine tank and looking up on the net what to do. It looks like a swimbladder problem or flipover disease. I've done what all the sites say by putting a few warmed squashed peas in the tank and he's now sitting in an epsom salt treatment, but I don't seem to be getting any luck. Any advice, anyone? I really think I'm gonna wake up in the morning and find a dead Splosh and I want to try and avoid that.

Oh no! I haven't a clue about fish tiggs but couldn't not say I'm sorry to hear he's poorly... hope it's not as serious as you suspect.

He's looking worse now. How long is this gonna go on for? It's like watching a member of the family dying?
Apparantly I've just read that there is an op that can be used for their swim bladders, but does anyone know any vets within the M25 radius or an hour or so's drive from Middlesex that deal with fish?

Swim Bladder- Swim or air bladder problems sometimes occur in freshwater fish. I have personally seen this is fancy goldfish such as Orandas, Ryunkins, and Shubunkins. When the bladder is effected, the fish will experience equilibrium problems. Sometimes, the problem is not the bladder but other problems which directly affect the bladder. Diseased and inflamed internal organs, improper water conditions or nutrition, and wounds received from fighting with another fish can also effect the equilibrium of the fish. Constipation is also known to affect a fish's swimming ability! Symptoms: The fish has problems swimming correctly. They may appear to be standing on their head, or floating to the surface and struggling to go down to the bottom, or possibly even have problems removing themselves from the bottom. At the later stages of the disease, the fish could lose its balance and swim upside down. Treatment: There is no specific treatment for this dilemma;however, you can try isolating the fish to a quarantine tank in which the water is shallow(this provides relief for the fish). Add one teaspoon of salt per gallon of water. Some individuals will feed thawed out frozen peas and this purges the fish's system and has been noted to help many fish. After 1-2 weeks a return to the main tank with deeper water may be tried. The best advice I can give is to maintain proper water conditions, feed your fish a well balanced diet, and possibly try feeding your goldfish sinking foods rather than floating types. They won't inhale so much air this way. The pellets if soaked in water before feeding will expand before the fish eats them and this has helped a lot. Good luck with this!! Check out www.koivet.com

Thanks for all your help everyone.
Sadly Splosh was dead when I got up this morning. Just about to give hime a little send off in the garden. I tried all the above with the salt and peas, but nothing worked.
Unfortunately Splish has had to be confined to the hospital tank now with salt and peas as he's going the same way and the 2 new ones, Jaws and Nemo aren't looking too good. Also all their scales have gone flaky overnight.
I'm going to change the entire gravel, pump and water in the tank in a min and put a new service kit in the main tank.
The only other thing I can think of is that the new fish we added a couple of weeks ago have added an infection to the tank (Jaws and Nemo) or there is some sort of nitrate imbalance, but we've had this tank for ages and had happy healthy fish. I really don't understand it.

Thanks everyone.
Unfortunately Splish has just gone, despite us doing everything. I went to put him in a bigger oxygenated tank and he just wasn't strong enough.
RIP Splish.
The other 2 are looking slightly brighter this morning and we have 2 supplies of oxygen leading to their new hospital tank.
I really don't want to lose any more. It's heartbreaking having to have 2 little burials in less than 24 hours.

It does sound like there's a disease issue going on Tigs. Can you get any kind of test done on the tank or something? Awww, I'm sorry mate.

Unfortunately I'd disposed of the water before I even thought of that.
The guy in the aquatic store, even asked for a sample, bgut don't think the new water would show much up.
Nemo and Jaws are now looking lifeless on the floor and from what I've read, it means their immune system is knackered. I just wish I knew of an aquatic vet who I could go to, but can't even find one on Google. Maybe I should pop down to WHSmiths and see if there's an advert in any of the fishkeeping magazines for an aquatic vet.

Despite my efforts today of going round my own vet and trying to find an aquatic one (none of which were open) and managing to get some antibiotics, sadly Nemo has just passed away.
I really had hopes for him as a few hours ago he had perked up and started chasing Jaws around who had also perked up.
Fingers crossed for Jaws whos gills are falling away.
RIP little Nemo. Sleep tight.
