Now, me being the clean freak with a nice tidy house, was a bit shocked to smell last night one of my cats appears to have sprayed all over the house........ Only prob is don't know where. I think it's Tigger as he's the boy cat and has now gone AWOL as had a barney with Lilly but A) how the heck am I gonna clean up where I can't find where it is? Am gonna have to get the carpet shampooer out when I get home and B) How can I stop this happening on a regular basis? Am used to having a nice smelling house, not what it smells like now!
I have loads of litter trays which I clean out at least once a day, but all I can think of is that it's Tigger the tom cat showing he's boss as the others seem to be using the litter tray (all girls) happily.
Any advice folks as don't like a pongy house and am gonna be spending hours cleaning when I get home today and don't want to be doing that every day!

has tigger had the , erm MMM the errr chop, that could be one of many (i just cant think of anymore at the moment) reasons for spraying, a lot of cats do like a nice clean litter tray you may need to clean them twice a day.
i shall keep thinking, im sure someone will come up with something.

Thanks Paul! Yep, he's had all his bits cut off! ;D Is strange as he never uses the litter tray anyway and has always done all his number ones and twos outside. as has Amy. The only 2 initially that used the litter trays were Gizmo and Potty and now Lilly has turned up we had a week and a half of bliss and now this has started. I just hope this isn't a territorial problem as I know Tigger had a tendancy of spraying in our local garden centre near our old house as the staff used to tell us about it. Stroppy ginger smelly mog!

is he neutered? its probably just a bit of marking due to Lily coming. I dont have cats, but obviously had foster dogs that have marked when they first arrive. with cats usually its the resident cat that will mark out of a bit of insecurity. I know cats pee is different, I was told by a friend with cats that tonic water neutralises the smell. I use a product called odorkill which you can buy from the vets personally. I would imagine if you dont know exactly where he has sprayed then you are going to have to get a carpet shamppoer and clean the whole caboodle. Check around first - hands and knees and sniff test , its usually areas like in the corners, or up the side of sofas so try those first. found this.. www.urine-off.co.uk/urineoff.html dont know about testing etc though.

if he isnt going out much he might be being bullied.
or he might have a Urinary Tract Disease, so a cheack up might be the thing., if he's spraying around the tray, put a rug down there. good luck.
*tigger stop doing that*

I think cat wee glows under UV light (or blacklight as it may also be known), doesn't it?
You must be able to pick up a toy torch type one from maplins I would think.

My sister used to call cat spaying cat spraying. She thought the vet neutered them by spraying their private parts with something. She believed this up until the age of 15 or 16 .

Thanks for all your help and advice. Apparantly the OH is taking the bathroom carpet up and we're gonna stick some lino down as that is one of the bad spots (downstairs is laminated so is ok there.)
Tigger still hasn't been back apparantly (and he's been putting on a shed load of weight so my guess is he's found a little old lady who's feeding him biscuits as is notorious for breaking and entering houses!
He's also a big bully despite him being neutered. Likes to think he's boss.
Will keep an eye out for a UV torch Pob and nip down to the vet and try and get some of that urine off as I tried to order it and it says it's available from vets. Hopefully the smell will be gone when I get back.
Typical male to make a mess and then disappear off!

Tiggs the vet should be able to give you a pheramone spray which will trick tigger into thinking his scent is all over the house, apparently you can get it in a plug in as well... I saw it on ebay before.

Oh brilliant, will try that, thanks Feral. Got home to find the bathroom carpet ripped off. The OH has scrubbed the floor, but the smell is still lingering, but the rest of the house ok. Oh well, we were gonna put a new bathroom in, looks like it's sooner than later! Wonder if Tigs would like the human version!!! www.attractant.co.uk/

Touch wood, since I posted this at the start of the week, I have a nice smelling clean house. Tigger has barely been in though, but I think he has a home with the old lady in her bungalow down the road and Sparky the cat 2 doors down.
He did come for a walk with us with the dogs today and was very affectionate and nuzzly. Think I'll just have to accept he wants to be an outdoor cat and some birds weren't made to be caged and he'll come and go as it pleases him.

Tiggerwoos, that plug in is called Feliway, you should be able to get it from your vet. It's great for calming cats down too
