Bearing in mind Ive only ever had a dog when I was aged 4 (am really a cat person), would your dog eat soya meat, made all gravy ish with dog biscuits and stuff Maisie.? Or would that not be good for him? Again PLEASE no one jump down my neck as this is only a random suggestion from someone who keeps cats. Dog food is mostly soya anyway, or so I got told by someone who worked at Pedigree petfoods. Not completely obviously, otherwise they couldn't advertise it as 'meaty' and the rest. But it does mean that a diet heavy in soya won't do them any harm, just boring in doggy terms.

I do give Sammy leftovers sometimes, probably about 3 times a week. He loves pasta and spaghetti bolognese, I'm just not sure how often its ok to feed like that. I thought dogs had to have a balanced diet?

I don't imagine ours were too balanced considering there were many times when our parents couldn't afford to feed us. My mum would give them a bit of complete dry food when she had enough money (7 dogs aren't cheap to feed). I often think some dogs are too well cared for when it comes to diet & being kept indoors, they get too fat & lazy. Ours were farm dogs and were out in all weathers & all lived to a respectable age considering there was cancer in the line handed down from their grandmother.

It is a good idea to mix different thugs into animals food. That is a good idea as it would serve two purposes. It would keep our animals well fed and get some yobbos off the streets! ;D

We've all got deficient brains and bad eyesight because of our deficient diet. Not to mention no sense of humour. Well that's what the ignorant masses think, anyway. A big flashing neon sign saying JOKE with an arrow, usually does the trick. I noticed, as well. I was just too polite to say anything in case you were really just piss poor at spelling

What about trying half vegan, half meat initially, then it will be a gradual introduction to whatever the dog is happiest with. Even if you ended up keeping him on half and half, then you'd still be reducing the amount of animals killed.
I think bobbywomble made a good point in mentioning that maybe the dog had been traumatised before he was rescued, so that has left him with emotional problems.
I have to admit my cats actually prefer vegan cat food to normal,(they aren't actually vegan) although I think I would have to know more about the taurine balance as have read the taurine that is artifically derived does not get absorbed by the body readily. Having said that, I'm sure the taurine put in commercial foods is synthetic as all the taurine would have dissapated when the food was cooked.
Dogs do seem to fare pretty well on a vegan lifestyle though compared to cats as they don't have the taurine problem.
It's all very confuddling!

I had to get someone else to feed him the cans I was given at first before I changed him onto veggie food. Anyway Vaiovegan said he would help me to rehome him so he won't be with me for much longer anyway.

www.madcowboy.com/02_VeganPets.html#ProductsInteresting non biased and non commercial site about vegan cats and dogs. The taurine problem that many worry about with the cats is not really a problem as when non vegan cat food is produced the taurine has to be synthetically added anyway so it isn't a natural form, so realistically I can't see there being much of a problem there. The main concern is getting the PH balance right, but you can buy strips to check that in their wee. Am leaning towards giving my mob a trial on some Ami Cat and Vege Cat supplement. I know they actually prefer it to standard food, so suppose a couple of weeks couldn't hurt.

Apart from it not being vegan, is the best stuff going.
Got my mob on that and they love it. Also has no nasty additives or cereals.

My little girl, Georgy, ate my 'Oliver' DVD last night. Bad Georgy. Actually, the DVD itself may still be OK but the case is seriously buggered. Bad Georgy.
