Principle reasons for this are increased rice production worldwide, the burning of vegetation, coal mining, leakage of naturla gas from distribution systems and flatulence from livestock as a result of intensive cattle rearing. Pearce (1989) has estimated the emission of methane from world's cattle is close to 100 million tonnes.
