Horrible, but nonetheless interesting subject. How many of you were made to dissect animals when they were at school and what is your opinion on the subject?
I personally refused at school as they had a thing about chopping up frogs of all things and asking us to bring in hearts from the butcher, but everytime I used to refuse...... The teenage rebel I was at the time.
What is everyone elses' opinion on dissection?

Bleeeuughh *shudders*, luckily our class managed to miss it.. we were supposed to do it but can't remember why we didn't. I was all set to refuse, the teachers all knew I was veggie anyhow so probably would expect me to refuse. Strange though I can calve a cow without batting an eyelid but slicing into something euuuuggghhh!
I'm not sure how I feel about it in schools, would banning it totally stop people from getting interested in medicine both animal & human?

There are other ways to learn about the innards of rabbits and human-types. Apparently, vets can go through their courses without vivisecting anything.
I have a hazy memory of a dissected frog at school. Just one for the whole class. It was already cut open and spread out. We didn't have physics, chemistry and biology lessons. We had science lessons that sometimes concentrated on one, and then the next time concentrated on another. This was a secondary modern school and we weren't thought to be bright enough for those posh subjects.

I remember being asked to disect a sheep's eyball which, at the time, I did quite happily. Was about 12 I think.
I also remember a lamb being disected as a demonstration for a number of classes. Again, just the one and they told us that it was stillborn and one of the kids brought it in from their parents' farm.

I had to disect a pigs heart two years ago... and race maggots as well (not cruel per se, but come on, in a class with 16 yr old lads, you know that some of the poor things are gonna get fed live to the fish and other creatures) Also, by bio teacher had a collection of mutant animals in jars.. i always refused to open my eyes when he brought them out.. there was a two-headed kitten...

No vivisection in my schools but a lot of dissection. I was an omni then so felt I couldn't really have any moral objections to it even thought I felt odd doing it. It helped me save the lives of many different animals over the last 15 or so vegan years, one way or another, and gave me the courage to dispatch several fatally wounded ones painlessly.

We were never made to, and tbh, the only disection that occured was that of what I think was a sheeps heart. We had the oppertunity to stand outside if we wished.
I, personally, wouldn't disect unless I knew the animal died a natural death. But then again, I could still see it from a respectful point of view that any animal that dies should be buried or cremated and that it would be disrespectful to cut up their body parts.
