So I've decided I want to set up a website, the only obstacle in my path being I have absolutely no idea how to go about setting one up . Could anyone offer me any advice to point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Depends what you want to put on it really. There's always myspace... An alternative is to use one of the many template based online editors but they cost a little bit of money, although not much. My website (link below, plug plug) costs me about £27/yr and its really flexible. I've got mine set up purely as a photo gallery but you don't have to to do that, you also get a 2 week trial for free.
I know of a couple of others but they are more photo dedicated. Try googling 'I want to set up my own website' and see whatr comes up.

I have a book about it somewhere, never read it though but it seemed fairly straightforward when I flicked through. I find it easier to learn from a book than have someone tell me. Try The Works bookstore. You should be able to pick something up for around £5
