I think we should all agree to differ on this one.
We all know that smoking is bad, passive smoking is bad, etc, but sheesh, it's not on a par with eating a KFC now is it?
Less people die from smoking and passive smoking than chickens die from being eaten.
As adults we have the possibility of removing ourselves from smoke exposure - chickens and other meat animals can't escape their short lives of torment.
Omnis cause more pain, misery and suffering than a vegan smoker will ever do.

I was just stating the different opinions we have LH. I never said my life was worse than yours and your experience was any easier than mine, i was just trying to make you see why i might be offended that's all. Glad to hear you have had the chance to tell your mum and you have got some of it off your chest. Nothing can change the past and i am sorry to hear it still affects your life on a day to day basis.

Sorry Tabs, have you tried asking him what changed his mind if he was so anti-drugs/anti-smoking before? I'm not telling you what to do, but I would certainly want to know if I were you! I've told you what I would do, as regards approaching shopkeepers, people are free to take it or leave it, no offence intended.

Pob's right we need to agree to differ on this one. Can I declare the smoking subject closed (including related topics such as how to bring up teenagers) because if it does get more heated I'll lock the thread.

That is true Pob, omnis cause more suffering than so-called vegan smokers, but the so-called vegan smokers still put me off going on demos! Cigarettes are NOT VEGAN because of non-vegan additives in tobacco so a smoker (unless they smoke American Spirit) cannot call themselves a vegan unless they are in denial about what being vegan means! Maybe the vegan smokers also eat biscuits with whey in and still call themselves vegan, it's no different!

That's a good point about people not going to meetups close to them, lilachamster. Perhaps what it sometimes comes down to is that they might want to get to know people they're going to meet up with online first, and then decide if they want to go and meet them in person. I guess, just because someone is vegan, it doesn't mean someone is necessarily going to want to meet them immediately and be best friends just because of that fact. I think how people come across online is very important in this regard. Cheers, metrics

I think its important how people come across too. Ive had run-ins with people on other forums and certainly wouldnt be looking forward to meeting them any time soon.

Maybe we all should take more care to watch what we say on this board. I often wonder what it is that makes a person a busybody, you know the kind that feels compelled to report back to others every trivial bit of discussion they hear. Maybe it makes them feel important.

Well this is a public area of the board. It can be seen by everyone whether a member of EV or not.
Best advice is not to rant about specific people, especially if they are vegan, as the rant is likely to be seen by that person or one of their friends.
If you got a problem with a vegan, best thing is to talk to them, not moan about them on a forum. None of us is perfect. We all are probably guilty of doing things without thinking at times, but vegans are likely to be more sensitive and open to constructive comment than most.
Omnis, family, and famous people, fine, have a good moan. But other vegans isn't a good idea in my view, as it just creates ill feelings and division.

Not sure about that Pob, what you said about vegans being open to constructive comment.
I tried to have a constructive discussion on email with a local vegan who had not turned up to an evening meal on a Saturday evening recently after saying he would be there, but he had not cancelled even though he had my mobile and could have called. I was trying to explain that although we are a friendly and informal group and pretty easy-going for most gatherings, if you book to go to a meal it is different because of needing numbers, so it is important to cancel or if not possible to cancel beforehand, to at least give some explanation afterwards (fair enough if there is a good reason he could not have cancelled). He was really rude back to me, oh well I suppose we don't need people like that in the group if they refuse to show reasonable consideration for the organisers!
Why are some people so rude and inconsiderate? I would not even treat meat-eaters that rudely, let alone vegans, and if I had arranged to be going to meet some ppl I would let them know if I was delayed or about to let them down, I'd not just decide to not turn up without a word of explanation or apology! Do I expect too much of ppl really?

LH he may have been abducted by aliens just as he was leaving for the meal. I bet you're not allowed to use mobiles on those spaceships, what with all that equipment and stuff? just a thought ;D
