Hi all, I'm travelling to SA in March and have just been checking out the menu options. Can anyone tell me if Hindu, Strict Western Vegetarian or Indian vegetarian are vegan?
Thanks!

Hindus do eat dairy so I doubt if they would be vegan. I suspect that 'strict western' would prob mean that they would guarantee free range eggs.
Do they not offer a vegan option? My only ever long haul was to NZ and apart from one minor cock up (they gave me a small carton of cream so I just gave it back) they delivered (that was Air New Zealand for future ref for anyone).

I managed to get a fruit meal once, but one time I ordered that they ignored it completely and all I was offered was the standard thing.
If that's an option choose that but take your own food too.

This page:( www.vegparadise.com/airline.html ) has some info on vegan meals with different airlines. When flying back from Turkey in the summer I was given a veggie meal as they didn't provide for vegans. I was able to eat the salad and a tub of grated carrot. The two people next to me felt so sorry for me they gave me their tubs of carrot too. So the trick is, if you don't get a decent meal, put a 'feeling sorry for yourself' look on your face and gain sympathy from those next to you

That's all very well if 3 tubs of grated carrot is your idea of a large afternoon. I think I'll stick to my hand-luggage-full-of-Green-&-Black's-strategy.

when i went to the states I had veg stirfry and rice which was ok, the 'snack meal' was just fruit but they also served a sandwhich at one point with cheese and somethingorother being the veggie option. a few years ago i went to st lucia with virgin and the food going there was very good; but the food coming back was prepared by the st lucians who had no idea what 'vegan' meant

I hate airline food with a passion. I always request a vegan meal when I book a flight online. Usually they end up giving me rice - which I hate. I'm a fussy eater. I usually open the foiled container, take one look, think 'eww' and put the foil back on. The people sat next to me probably think I'm weird. LOL.
I've had a few 'non-vegan' items on the tray such as some condiment or something that has whey or something else in. I always try and write to the airline afterwards and tell them off! They need to learn these things.
I also hate the short-haul flights to Europe where they don't even given vegans a proper meal. They'll come out with just a choice of something like cheese sandwich or ham sandwich. And then they'll follow it up with an ice-cream. So us vegans can't have anything.
Usually I pack some bags of crisps, maybe a Luna bar or two and mostly eat them. Last time when I came back from LA I had some cookies I bought from Wholefoods.
