Hope no one minds me starting a thread on this.
Id love to learn more about growing my own produce. I grow herbs just fine, and tomatoes do well, Ive grown onions this year which are huge. Apart from a little pepper plant which hasnt born anything yet, thats about me on the 'grow your own food 'front.
Id like an allotment separate to my garden, to try out. What does everyone else grow?

people are probably bored to death of my gardening adventure, but i'll bore you some more if you like I have a large garden which i used to have as 100% edible plants. i have now reduced that to about half. I have pt in a wildlife pond and a wildflower garden and also a small patio area. i have loads of perennial edible stuff including 3 apple trees, 3 pear trees, red currants, black currents, rsapberries, nettles, strawberries, alpine strawberries, aspargus, parsley, mint, tyhme, rhubard, jeruselum artichockes, horse radish, chives. I have just planted some rocket and some edible marigolds i am not a great gardener, but i love homegrown stuff, i have loads of room left to grow stuff and will start next year with some easy things

I only have a small front garden, but has anyone any ideas what I can grow in pots? Would love to grow a few bits and bobs. Come to think of it, think I may go down the pick your own shop again this afternoon.

Ive grown the onions in pots - it think they actually did better because the pots were on a high table so no snails got up there. you can plant almost anything in pots, the herbs seem to do better as well potted.

I ate 3 of my tomatoes today. They are doing OK I think. Confused me, though, as I forgot they are yellow tomatoes. Ha ha. I was waiting for them to go red!!!
They are really tiny but very sweet. They are cherry tomatoes.

Ooohh what about some alpines with fine gravel VBB? Or do you specially want them to be edible? I just gave two Belfast sinks to me rents, well swapped them for two rather nice concrete planters.

I'd fill them with herbs then... harvest them & freeze them for the winter... there's still time to plant out a few now.. lidl have some this week if you're not too bothered about them being organic.

Aye you can freeze them in ice cubes (1 spoonfull of herbs each cube) or just bung them into tubs or freezer bags then just lob them in when you're cooking. I think frozen herbs taste far better than dried.

I have some Borage seeds, but got no idea what to do wirth borage. don't know how to grow it and what to do with it when it's grown also have some cos lettuce, woul;d that grow in planters?

It can grow quite big so dont put too many in one container. Borage can be planted from spring to late summer , it will then seed itself once its established. it needs to be in a sunny spot, but with container gardening you can move this around to get the benefit of the sun. If you plant amongst tomato plants, borage is supposed to improve the flavour of the tomatoes. you can use the flowers in salads, leaves in salad,it sort of tastes like cucumbery in salad, nice to add with chives to potato salad , chopped leaves can also added to stews and soups just before the end (like you would with coriander). you can also make tea from the leaves. very attractive to bees too I dont know much about growing salad stuff though, hope someone else does, Id love to grow my own salad.
