Does anyone use any of these schemes that deliver local areas, and if so, any companies that are worthwhile. I'd like to support local businesses especially seeing as I try to get all my produce organic anyway, but on visiting an organic festival recently, I was disgusted to see a box of about 5 baking potatoes, couple of courgettes, a cauliflower and few carrots for £10, so if anyone knows any decent companies that operate these schemes or has had any experience of any then that would be brilliant.

I live on Orkney and get a pleasant middleaged guy who lives on South Ronaldsay to deliver boxes to the biggest of the two towns here, which my mum then picks up and brings me. he's the only person in the isles, i think, who does boxes of organic veg, so if you find yourself in the area he's the dude to ask about 'em . He's just started up his growing harvesting season again for this Summer & Autumn, so i got my first box from his yesterday ooooh it;s great ! It has two small cabbages, two fairly sizable lettuces, 8 radishes which looked much larger before i took the tops off to see how many there were, but which are lovely big juicy radishes, a bag of potatoes, not sure how many that might be, ah..... quite a lot, though... enough to last one person for a week happily, i would think. And it had a generously sized bag of little mange tout peas. It was a really nice box to have I'm told that courgettes will be coming soon, also, and no doubt carrots sometime. It was £8.50 (no extra for the delivery to the main town part, which i thought was very generous of them) , which i think is a very reasonable price for such a nice, substantially-sized box of vegetables. If it's getting towards the end of the harvesting season and all he has to give are loads of ptoatoes and turnips, then you can get a huge box of both of these , far more than one person can eat in a week, even if they eat clapshot and chips every day, for about a fiver each. Which i find quite incredible.

I found Goodness Direct the other day does the schemes, but am dubious how many of each fruit and veg they put in the box.
Anyone else used them?

Hi I have used several and they vary, not least of all seasonally.
A relative recently got a leaflet offering a box via the MILKMAN. Any thoughts on that?

I got a leaflet through my door today for Abel & Co (think they do quite a wide area of the UK?) and went on their website and ordered a weekly £22 family large fruit and veg box. Got my first delivery coming on Monday. They appear to be pretty ethical (apart from selling meat and dairy also) but they do have a zero air miles policy also. If the box is as big as the piccie looks, it will probably work out cheaper than Tesco's. Here's the website link if anyone's interested: www.abel-cole.co.uk

I've just had a wee look at a local one which looks good, might start using them... Tescos are building a massive store beside us but I think it'd be better to give our money to the lil man when we can. In case any Norn Iron peeps want a look www.organicdoorstep.co.uk/

I get mine from Riverford - www.riverford.co.uk/ They're based in Devon and deliver across the South of England. The quality is always great and they're reasonably priced - cheaper than the supermarkets anyway.

I get mine from Goosemoor becoz i work there! www.goosemoor.info (Yorkshire) They're a vegetarian/organic business too, there are a few organic businesses knocking about up my way whose proprietors hobbies include riding out on a week-end with the local hunt, and getting the old shot gun out to blast some of the 'other' local residents.

I used to get a box delivered from flights www.flightsorchardorganics.co.uk/ they were really good but not really practicle for me on my own. In my little town there is a saturday market and one of the local organic veg companies has a market stall. The veg is really good and a good price too ;D

Maybe this site will help you Alison........ Seems to have some in the West Mids: www.alotoforganics.co.uk/cats/organic-vegetables.phpWell I got my delivery yesterday and was very disappointed with the produce. A few measly items of what was stated only and the heavy veg was put on the fruit so half of it was bruised and leaking everywhere. I have written them a email to complain. Meanwhile I haven't given up. I've got a nice large family sized box for £21.99 arriving on Thurs of fruit and veg from these people: www.everybodyorganic.co.uk

I get mine from here www.wildstarfood.com/index.html, they are really good and if you have a problem they soon sort it out. If you don't like a particular veg they will swap it for you too.

I'll be getting my first Everybody Organic box today. Got a phone call from them though saying that the box I wanted wasn't available so had to get a £28.99 one which included salad items also, which I don't mind anyway.
Will let you all know what I think of it later........ Hey, hope there's no banana spiders in it!!!

Had my box and there was loads of fresh yummy fruit and veg, well packed too and much cheaper than going to Tesco for the amount. If anyone wants the details it's www.everybodyorganic.co.uk and they source from local farms to you in the UK to save on fuel. Well worth a try in supporting the small companies and saying boo to the chains when poss!
