Yep. That's right. I have been signed off work, and having a not nice nice episode of de[ression. My mum says it isn't a coincidence that this has happened at the same time as me going vegan. Says I am not getting enough nutrients.
blah!

Just to be on the safe side you could always take a multi-vitamin. Holland and Barretts do a vegan one. Has iron and some other bits and bobs that can be a bit low on a vegan diet if you're not very organised.

Says I am not getting enough nutrients. blah! How typical if anything, eating healthier and in accordance to one's spiritual beliefs/ philosophy improves one's psychological wellbeing, not deteriorate it into depression... Yes, not enough nutrients could participate in depression, but what about all those depressed omnis, huh ?! as if eating a cow that ate grass has enough nutrients is it, but , why not cut out the middlemen & eat vegetables ? they are the source of those nutrients that are eaten from the cow, MINUS all the added garbage ! People keep misunderstanding those who are willing & changing, and this societal blindess has also a lot to do with one's mental state, even to a point of causing depression Besides, nowdays, depression is "diagnosed" far too often, even when the person isn't... hey, want some pills for your brain ? here ! On another level, depression is one of our modern plagues, which can be caused by any number of factors, ranging from enviromental, to chemicals present everywhere in our lives, to bad feng shui, and one overlooked : not drining enough water... and how about difficult relationships ? It’s so easy to blame veganism, isn’t ?

Well I've been vegan for over 15 years and I've been depressed for about 18 months.
Not conviced theres any kind of connection between the 2 scenarios.
My personal experience is that work makes you ill...

Ive never suffered from "proper" depression, although at the time it feels quite bad. Life experiences have made me depressed over the years, but Ive usually been able to pull myself out of it.
Veganism wont have anything to do with being depressed. Your mum is just worried about you. My mum always thinks I dont get enough protein. If I ever tell her Im tired, she always tries to force a bacon sarnie on me (which of course is a known anti depressant.......)
Im lucky with work. If Im depressed, work always centres me a bit. I look at all the poor residents with dementia, I see how their wives and families cope with it all and I think Im so lucky to have my health etc. But as I said, my little mood swings cant really be called depression.

Thanks. I knwo she cares. Work is definitely a factor for me. I',m a teacher in a tough school, just taken on a responsibility, butthere are other things.
As to pills, I do take them as the doctor says, but they have alwys helped me stay a little more in touch with teh world. I tried to get over my first breakdown on my own with no medical intervention and made it a lot worse.
I have tried st johns wort etc, but it just doesn't work. SO for now tis the pills and some vegan cake!

I've suffered depression on and off for a long time. For me its gotten worse the more I learn about all the cruelty in the world so I would say that in many cases, depression is a symptom of having your eyes opened rather than a symptom of veganism.
