>:(I knew that after some debate and they new the opposition to it ut went ahead anyway , but the BUAV approved the BODY SHOP even though ti's owned by L'oreal which is owned by the evil Nestle . Well anyway I was walking through town yesterday when I noticed in the window of the Body Shop a massive BUAV approved bunny approval sticker. I just can't believe the BUAV would approve such a company now that it's owned by L'oreal etc. And now people may think the body shop is a ok place to shop coz of the BUAV approval sticker. rant over.

Its a difficult one but all the groups like BUAV and the Vegan Society who offer trademarks always make it clear that they are single issue organisations and don't get involved in wider considerations. So as long as the individual product satisfies the criteria for the trademark they will always allow them to use it. There are a few reasons for this. One, that to take wider considerations like company ownership into account may possibly breach their charitable aims and you can bet that a company owned by L'Oreal would be very quick to mount a challenge with the Charities Commission, a notoriously conservative body whose outlook hasn't changed much since Victorian times. The RSPCA (yes those dangerous radicals) got into trouble over campaigns against testing on primates being incompatible against charitable law www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/312/7035/866/aSecond, think how many issues they would have to consider, BUAV members range from bunny cuddlers to radicals who take an interest not just in animal rights but all forms of human, civil, social, trade union etc rights. A cynic might also suggest that the fact that they receive fees for the use of the trademark is a factor but hey everyone's gotta make a living.

Not really anything to do with BUAV but couldn't be bothered to start another thread. Apparently Anita Roddick has died from a brain haemmorage tinyurl.com/3ygy9g

Others may slate her but I think she was a pioneer bringing cosmetic vivisection to mainstream attention

That is sad, and she wasn't what I would consider old.
I had gone off the Body Shop years ago when they started to be vague and unhelpful over what was vegan, while many other companies were much more clear and helpful.
BUAV clearly do not only approve vegan products (I don't know if they only approve vegetarian products or if they also approve some with slaughter by-products in, does anyone know?).
On the other hand the Vegan Society take animal testing very seriously as we know from their recent de-trademarking of Ecover.

They approve items which include animal products in them.
