Looking for a bit of advice on my new kitchen. I am getting a friend of mine who is a joiner to modernise my very small kitchen by knocking a wall in and making a kitchen diner to make more room. I have seen a couple of the kitchens he has installed and they look good but he admits he knows little about the appliances other than installing them. I live on my own but reckon if I improve my cooking I may stand a better chance of converting meat eaters. any tips welcome

Main things I would recommend would be an electric fan oven, with gas hobs, preferably seperate grill. Plenty of cupboard space for staples and tins. A larder type cupboard would be good so that non fridge veg keeps longer. Decent sized fridge and freezer.
1 and a half size sink's are useful.
Worktop space is usually at a premium if you cook a lot. If you have gadgets that aren't out, they don't get used.

Main things I would recommend would be an electric fan oven, Nooooooooooo I hate those things. I inherited one when I moved into my house and it never cooked evenly. Everything was either underdone or burnt. I was so glad when it blew up so I could go back to gas! I'm agreeing with the separate grill and I would also say "Get a dishwasher" It will change your life, truly

Umm errr I see you're pretty big on environmental issues Neil after reading your other posts therefore please ignore my advice to get a dishwasher. I need one because I hate washing dishes and I have lots of animal dishes that need washing frequently

Apparently all kitchen apps have to have stuff like energy efficiency ratings on them so I will look out for all that stuff.

They are great - I usually just turn stuff round once to be sure it's even - and they cook really quickly. I could never get on with gas ovens at all

Will probably go with a gas hob and a electric oven but still not 100% sure yet. Is there much difference in the different brands or are they all much of a muchness?

Probably just look for the oven to be A rated efficiency.
Last oven I bought was a Cannon which was great. Can't really say if other makes are better or worse.

As you have a sun room, you can grow your own herbs, chillis, tomatos etc. They're so much better when they're freshly picked. I agree with Pob about the big fridge and larder. If you're short on space or have awkward corners, shallow shelving can house jars for all your dried goods like lentils, beans, rice, etc. I'll look forward to seeing pictures of the finished room.
