I try not to use carrier bags when shopping and always take my 'ever lasting' bags with me. you'd be amazed at how many people use the shops carrier bags! next time your stood in a long que when shopping see how many people you can spot that bring their own bags,i know its sad but it relieves the boredom while waiting!!! ;D

I do try to reuse the shop bags a time or two before putting them in the recycler at Sainsbury's, although occasionally I forget to take them out with me, but they all do go in the recycler after being well used, not just in the bin. We have the stronger "bags for life" too sometimes, which you can use a lot of times. I do try to look if anyone behind or in front of me is buying all vegan or all veggie food and I hate it when I am stuck behind someone with loads of pieces of dead animal on the conveyor belt.

I usually take my onya bags or jute bags with me, occasionly il use the carriers as they make good bin liners i often have to remind staff i dont want a pile of plastic bags, and get strange looks. I took a split bag for life back to waitrose last week to get a new one but gave it back as it had pictures of meat and fish on I do that see whats in peoples baskets whilst in the que

I've been using my own shopping bags for years. I used to have regular arguments with moronic shop assistants who insisted I had to use their plastic bag "for security reasons". That hasn't happened for a couple of years though, so I think the message is getting out there. I wish the government would start taxing plastic bags, like they do in Ireland.

We use the supermarket plastic bags - they get re-used, though, for disposing of cat litter.

Everyone in my office takes the plastic bags from the supermarket when buying stuff at lunchtime, but they are used for the kitchen bin, so I think it's ok as we'd buy binliners otherwise! In Sainsbury's near my college in London they ignore you if you say 'I don't need a bag' - they're like robots and put it in one anyway.

I cant say I take much notice of whats in other peoples shopping bags in the queue. Im just always proud that mine is full of healthy stuff. Except when its got chocolate in. And wine.

Its not just the environment that these bags hurt. Animals can swallow them and it kills them. After they decompose the bag is freed to be swallowed by other animals. I've managed to get into the habit of reusing my bags all the time so haven't taken a new one for a couple of months. I also have 2 onya bags. I put the plastic bags in the recycler when they wear out.
I think they do need to start charging for the bags or force people to use an alternative like the blue box scheme they had at Tesco around 12 years ago. Its been scrapped now, presumably didn't catch on.
