What does everyone think of fireworks?
The thought occured to me, as I went to a couple of displays over the weekend, but made sure they weren't in a conservation area or near any wildlife parks as that Reading one was an appauling idea.
Basically my thoughts are that they SHOULD be banned, unless it is an authorised display set up in an environment where it isn't going to upset the local habitat and animals. There are too many accidents and idiots that go round causing injuries........... At my local leisure centre last week some idiot went in there and set off a box off 200, putting several people in hospital.
I'm glad the bonfires seem to be being phased out as there were too many horror stories of animals making nests in them before they were lit.

Dont get me started in fireworks. We have hell with the hounds, they are terrified of them. We spend the run up (well I have it for longer as we have weekly displays where I live throughout the summer on the beach ) comparing notes as to what we have tried to calm our hounds. DAP diffusers, Wraps/tshirts, Rescue Remedy, etc etc. its a nightmare. anyway.. BBC are asking for your opinions here.. newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?sortBy=1&threadID=4634&start=30&tstart=0&&&&&&edition=1&ttl=20061106135217and my local MP's wife (who works in rescue) is campaigning for a ban, as well as MP Laura Moffat and MP Lyndsey Hoyle has a petition going to ban them If you can quickly write to your MPs today , there is a discussion in the House of Commons. Grrrrrr is my answer! Jed is terrified of them, he will ignore the tiny quieter ones, but not the big bangers/rockets. We had to stay in with him - music on full blast, and plenty of cuddles. We use rescue remedy, vet gave acp meds but the effects are scary, would rather sit up with him. I was talking to this big issue seller in Birmingham sat, he had 2 dogs - id taken them some vegan dog biccys, he was saying how scared the one was - very stressed girl her fur was falling out she was that bad. I told him about rescue remedy but he had not got the funds - so i went to the health shop and got him a bottle, i really hope it worked for her and helped her thru a tough weekend, sleeping out without much shelter? Safari park by me had fireworks how stupid is that? I agree to that it should be kept to organised displays on 1-2 nights of the year, and i guess new years eve. That way we can be prepared. Alison

I agree, organized displays only. I have had a friend walking through the woods with another friend and some kids were hiding out and lit firecrackers near them. So of course, my friend freaked out like crazy and is scared to death of them and paranoid about walking in the woods, etc. Some people just suck! I was driving down the road late one night and this truck was in front of me with a couple teenage boys in the back and they lit firecrackers and threw them off the back of the truck at my car. I would slow down, then they would slow down. I didn't want to get on an even more remote road and this was back when I had no cell phone. It was scary. I'd rather leave it to the professionals.

Oops, forgot: In the US, firecrackers are illegal to buy in most states, however there are certain times of the year (Independence Day) when you can buy them. Here in the south where I am, around that time of year they set up huge tents of fireworks in parking lots and on the side of the road.

Fireworks annoy me no end. Would love a ban on them all.

According to the RSPCA 700 dogs went missing in Brisbane as a result of the Millennium fireworks. They would all have been terrified and some no doubt would have been injured or killed in road accidents. I think it would be a good compromise to put a cap on the noise level allowed as I see no necessity for bangs as loud, or louder than, a 3" mortar!
