Did you know that scientists have calculated that turning vegan reduces your co2 emissions more than giving up your car. So why is it that when environmental issues are discussed no one ever advocates reducing the use of animal products?

Really good question.
Usually you just get superficial suggestions about changing lightbulbs or taking three holidays a year instead of four.
Just stay at home and be a vegan. Give up on flying and driving. Now why aren' they saying that?

Exactly AC
Going vegan is the single biggest contribution to reducing co2 emissions a person can make (but "they" don't want to hear that)

Actually a few people are saying it. Its the basis of the Vegan Society's campaign for World Vegan Day/Week and there was an article in Ethical Consumer magazine which quoted from Quaker Green Action www.quakergreenaction.org/. They have a CO2 calculator on their site. They say that a typical meat eater produces 2000kg greenhouse gas equivalent whereas a vegan only produces 1000kg. What is criminal is that none of the mainstream environment groups such as FoE or Greenpeace are saying it. Thats because most of their members are organic bacon eating Guardian readers who wouldn't buy their recycled Christmas cards from them any more if they had their illusions shattered.

I agree, all this talk recenlty on the tv about increasing car taxes , and likein the past raising taxes on cigarettes etc. Then why not on meat? That causes massive amounts of pollution . Maybe that should be our next target!

Taxes on meat, good idea. When I heard Alex Bourke on R. 2 yesterday he avoided controversy, just made it sound like meat causes massive health probs for society.
Why not link meat with impotence like those anti-smoking ads?

Veggiesosage is right, there are people saying it, including George Monbiot.
Today its in the news that fish will be wiped out by 2050, with dire consequences for the sea.

Only too true, they are do as we say not do as we do organisations, the last thing they will ever work on is their members.

Just to show that the Vegan Society is doing something useful here's a link to a pdf copy of their 'Eating the Earth' leaflet which was prepared for World vegan Day. It puts the environmental atrguments for veganism quite comprehensively. www.vegansociety.com/phpws/files/phatfile/Environbooklet.pdfIts quite a big download though so may not be too practical if you're on dial up. Send it to all your friends!

this newsround article explains it in such simple terms about the huge amount of pollution just ONE cow makes and its per day too news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_6040000/newsid_6046900/6046962.stmCows' farting and burping must be brought under control because they're causing global warming problems, a climate change expert has warned. Just one cow gives off enough harmful methane gas in a single day to fill around 400 litre bottles, which is really bad for the environment. For more info on the environment see here : www.goveg.com/environment.asp

There is a mini show called 'the daisy chain live' that is taking place in april at 3 counties show ground in Malvern. It is promote all things environmentally friendly - eco-build houses, reed bed sewage systems, elec cars etc.. etc..
last year our local vegan group had a stand there to promote the vegan diet, which went well and we have been invited back this year (april 2007) ;D
Additionally this year there are going to be some 'talks' and i have volunteered to do a 'how your diet effects the environment talk' so i am busy collecting info at the moment ;D
I am hoping to get it video'd so if it goes well i can put it online for other people to use / view.

... 'how your diet effects the environment talk' ... [nitpick] It's 'affects' not 'effects' [/nitpick] Just thought I'd mention it in case you're going to print a flyer with that title.

VBB, why don't you ask the Vegan Society for a bundle of those leaflets I've linked to so you can give them out at the end?

One of the other group members has also sent for leaflets for our stall so there should be some available

This makes me so angry. Yes tax tax tax on meat, make it so high that no one can afford to eat it anymore. I guess the constant piss taking of veggie and vegan in the media doesn't help convert people. Maybe if people knew the impact eating meat has on the environment they would think about what they eat, i wont hold my breath though.

Greenpeace just look for easy targets so that donations keep coming in. I believe they even take donations from Merck who produce the vioxx drug. They also target Apple computers which are run by veggie Steve Jobs but ignore Microsoft who fund warmonger Bush and Oxford Uni

I found a forum board for environmentalists, I asked how many were vegan and explained the link between meat&dairy industry and pollution etc. I got bombarded with comments saying along the line of , I do enough by using public transport, or, there's more in the world that contribute to global warming than eating animals and veganism is an extremists action to take to stop global warming!!! Blah blah blah!! Some people hey!!
