hi Rubyred, sorry that your mom gives you so much hard time...
One cannot tollerate the intollerable ; fur is evil, even if one isn't vegan... but, if your mom calls herself a vegan, then she's being contradictory, since a vegan will NEVER buy or even use second hand fur or leather, wool & so forth...
Fur is one of the worse forms of cruelty to animals. My wife & I have noticed how fur is back in style and many people wear it again, as if nobody cared anymore... Contrary to the 1990's, where the level of awareness was high and fur was being called what it is, evil, nowdays, seems that all the stress around the word have been too much and people just don't care anymore...
Singers, actresses, models, wear fur a lot ! Hit tv shows such as desparate housewives, show women in fur and they try to make it appear sexy... when it's not !
I won't go into the list since this isn't the topic, but bottom line is, fur is evil and contradictory to the vegan philosphy.
If I was you, I'd tell your mom that vegan isn't just abotu food, it's not a diet, it's a mindset, a philosophy, a way of life, in which no animal is supposed to suffer ! no fur, no leather, wool, not using products tested on animals & so forth... if she trully wants to be a vegan, she beeds to be true to herself...
If she doesn"t want to be a vegan, there are still ways to get her sensitive to fur... I'll get back to you with some lists.

I think the problem isnt that the mother was actually buying fur, but buying from a shop that also sells fur...

Well, the fur industry is really bad, I hate stores that sell it, or "also"... The other day, it was sunny & all, but so many people wore coats with fur trims... it's enraging!
The fact she was buying is a problem when she claims she's a vegan... am not against the fact that a huge part of it are the stores, but if people stopped buying, they'd go out of business

Thanks for the support veganwabbit & applecrumble(yes, I was hacked off about a lot of stuff at once!). We kinda sorted it out -she said she wasn't thinking straight (whatever..) & aplogised but said she didn't consider it any different to buying from somewhere that sells meat or leather. Whilst I agree I can't justifiy purchasing items from shops selling fur when similar items could easily be purchased from shops that aren't supporting the fur industry.

hi rubyred, yw for the support you can come back anytime Unfortunately, most stores sell everything, not limiting to vegan and animal friendly products ; maybe one day this world will offer stores that will be purely vegan... one can dream. In either case, when we can buy in a store that doesn't also sell fur or meat, that's where we go, otherwise, have to "settle" for these evils... very sadly !

Unfortunately, the souvenir shops tend to sell little furry animals that are made in China and used to be made of dog and cat fur (not that that is any worse than any other animal's fur). I think that Aus has now legislated against the importation of such goods.

There's a lot of info on the Chinese, Korean etc. dog and cat industry but it's too close to my bed time for me to look it up. (It gives me nightmares) The Korean Animals Protection Society, run by Kyenan & Sunan Kum do some good work. See: www.koreananimals.org/
