Ive no idea what section to put this in... I need ideas for hedging my front garden, atm Ive victorian railings with a gate (wrought iron) along the front and walls along the sides, Id like to grow some sort of hedging along the railings, to stop litter blowing in, but also because it looks nice. Any ideas as to what to buy for hedging? Ive seen lavender ones, but they are so established it would take years for it to looks nice, and my garden has lots of lavender already. It doesnt have to be flowery, so privet type suggestions are welcome, and we dont mind anything that needs taming into shape either. any ideas peeps?

thats alright Limey, Ive googled and got some ideas, but not sure what grows quickly and what doest. I would ideally like lavender but they are quite expensive to buy in the size I would need, so I think Im ruling that out. so Im looking at the box type of stuff.

Hmmm, how about bamboo? My parents just bought something that is growing quite fast up their trellis on the side of their house - honeysuckle perhaps? I don't know why I bother, I really have no clue what I'm talking about and what works in your neck of the woods.

Lavender, What about Wisteria? It's so beautiful but you would probably want an arbor of some kind. I have some huge hedges in our backyard that grows about six feet a year. We also have a bamboo in the front yard. I'll take some pics and upload them in a bit so you can see.

Isn't wisteria poisonous to kids or animals, I remember reading something about it?
An evergreen climber would be a quick and pretty way of adding coverage, perhaps apple blossom clymatis, although if it's a windy spot it might not suit.

Feral, I've never heard that (about wisteria). I have one in my backyard so I'll have to check that out. Clymatis would be nice, so would Jasmine.

Yikes! According to wikipedia: The seeds are produced in pods similar to those of laburnum, and, like that genus, are poisonous.

Dont get Virginia Creeper - its invasive, spreads like wildfire and not evergreen though it goes a magnificent red in autumn.
