THREE ARRESTED DURING PROTEST + BEARLANDS STORY SO FAR
13 November 2007
If they don't want to take it off the menu, and you keep protesting, that is harassment. - Lies, opression and intimidation by Gloucestershire's finest.
The campaign against Bearlands restaurant in Gloucester has been a hazardous one to say the least. Arrests have been plenty, and one activist was even rendered unconscious after sitting down during his arrest. Activists have been assaulted repeatedly by members of staff, mainly by the head chef who seems to mimic Gordon Ramsey's jumped up ego and aggressive attitude. On one occasion the head chef through a bucket of water over the protesters in front of two PCSOs. Incredibly, he was not arrested later that night for assault, but allowed to come into the police station when he had some spare time so they could issue him with a caution. With little doubt, the police were reluctant to even give him this caution. Throughout the campaign, activists have reported all incidents to the police, and out of them all this was the only one that has been followed up. Activists were holding an information stall in the city centre recently, and their signs, reading "Boycott Bearlands", were torn off the stand by the head chef and manager as they walked past. The chef tore the sign to pieces. Having witnessed this mindless criminal damage, two activist tried drawing attention to what they where doing. When two police officers arrived they where heard to radio through "we are with the animal rights people". They then told the activist that he may be arrested for causing alarm harassment and distress by their raised voices. The police's pathetic argument fell apart when one activist asked if they would threaten an old lady with the same if she had just had her handbag stolen and raised her voice to draw attention to the criminals. Neither the manager nor the chef were arrested for criminal damage. I'm sure things would be a little difference if it was their vile menu that was torn up.
Last night, on the 12th of November, two protesters arrived at Bearlands to protest but as no staff where on the premises so they decided to walk around the corner to its sister restaurant, The Grill (who have foie gras listed on their xmas menu). When they arrived there one of the chefs threatened to slap them and proceeded to ridicule them. The head chef then came over thrusting his face into the face of one of the protesters and was lead away by the manager. The two activist went to report this at the police station which is about 100 yards from the restaurant where they where joined by another activist. The first activist was invited to make his statement. Unbelievably, he was then arrested in the interview room for harassment. The other two activists then went back to Bearlands to continue the protest. Two police cars pulled up at the side of the road at about 7pm. 20 minutes after the first arrest, they informed both activists they where under arrest for harassment, and both activist sat down and went limp as they have every right to do. One asked how he was guilty of harassment to which an officer replied "If they don't want to take it off the menu, and you keep protesting, that is harassment." Priceless!! So a sustained legal protest campaign now constitutes a criminal offence!!When officers were lifting the activist into the police car, one female officer told him that they would be getting sued by herself for putting her back out. Has this stupid officer not been taught the basics of health and safety? She dose not have to lift anything that would risk injury to herself.
All activists were booked in and interviewed throughout the night, finally being released at 6am, minus all electronic equipment such as phones and cameras. Apparently a £15 pound phone without the ability to record sound let alone take pictures, is vital evidence because "of the recordings made with it". Gloucestershire constabulary seem to have something against the peaceful protesters in the area. Maybe it's the amount of times they have been made to look foolish by arresting activists illegally.
Please Join the protests against Bearlands. To do so, contact us through the site email and we will give you details of demo dates and times. If is not possible for you to join the demos outside then why not ring them and let them know how you feel about them continuing to sell foie gras. Contact details are below. They may tell you they have stopped serving it as they have to us, but we know for a fact they still have it on some of their menus (New Year's Eve menu - Pan fired fresh foie gras served with pear chutney) and have not stopped selling it. We will continue the protests until we receive a signed statement informing the public they will not sell foie gras in the future.
