I should apologise for this before I start, I think it'll turn into a bit of a rant
I had a bit of an argument with with a few meat eaters recently, and it really made me feel quite alone. It was on another forum, and started because of an article in the paper where some animal rights people had protested and disturbed some people fishing. I said that whilst I don't condone violence, I do agree with their motives - any animal harm is wrong, whether it's in the name of fun, sport, science or food. Of course, that kicked off a whole load of fun
The board is large, and has many members, but only two vegans that I know of. So, I was pretty much the only one on my side of the discussion. I got a few insults about my choice of lifestyle, and few sarcastic comments about how lack of protein has obviously affected my sense of humour when I objected to being insulted. Anyway, that kinda annoyed me and the discussion went downhill after that.
A couple of idiots decided to argue the case for plants having feelings, and no amount of banging my head against a brick wall and posting links to the contrary seemed to make a difference. As far as I can see, if a plant doesn't have a central nervous system, it can't feel pain, right? Well, apparently, I'm wrong in saying that because it's just a case of 'we haven't found out how they feel pain yet, but you can't be so arrogant as to assume they don't'. I even got called racist for caring about animals but not plants (I mean, wtf??)
Someone posted a link to Stephen Brynes 'Myths of Vegetarianism' which is the biggest load of rubbish I've ever read in my life. Unfortunately, some people took it as gospel and told me I was a fanatic for refusing to consider it. Apparently it is something for us vegans to think about. Seriously, if you want a laugh, read this:
homodiet.netfirms.com/otherssay/vegetarianism.htm
I think what saddened and surprised me the most, and what is weighing on my mind, is the fact that there we so many people who just didn't care about the animals at all. Even someone who claimed they used to be vegan before realising that it wasn't morally wrong to eat animals (how is it morally right??). Not one of them would acknowledge that the meat industry was cruel, or that animals suffer. They agree that animals may be in pain 'for a few seconds' when they die, but seem to be living under the impression that for the rest of their lives the animals are living in a childrens book where they're looked after by a kindly farmer who lets them roam sunny fields all day. Someone said "well it's not as if they're boiled alive is it?" Yes, it is! But, of course, they won't listen to that, it's just some fanatical vegan over reacting and making things up.
Sorry about this rant, I just really need to know that I'm not the only person in the world who thinks eating meat is wrong, and that the meat industry is cruel, and unnecessary.
Thanks for letting me moan
