I cant get to many demos either. I work extremely long hours every other weekend. I would have loved to have gone last weekend. My partner went with a friend though. We all do our best. Its not up to anyone else to judge. I have a customer with cerebral palsy who is desperate to come on a demo and I am trying to figure out a way of getting her there. Hopefully we can sort something out. Tabs, let me know if ur friend can get to the next SPEAK demo and if she doesn't mind, would she mind being right at the front? Im gonna do what the other side do and play on the human emotion. I will ask her Saucy!. She seems very interested in it all.

I think that works both ways, though. It doesn't come automatically just because you (about whom we know nothing) claim to be more dedicated to going to SPEAK demos than anyone else on this board. Those of us that work can't get to every protest that we would like to, and even people that don't work can't manage to be in the dozens of places they would need to be on any given day to support every cause that they would want to. I honestly don't think it is going to be the demos that will get that building stopped, re-purposed, or demolished. I do believe that they are important, though, to show that we are still intent on stopping that place from becoming operational. I haven't made any claims that I attend more SPEAK demos than other or that I am more dedicate than others. I have said that 'you are not alone' in a post meaning WE ARE ALL GUILTY! With all due respect to your opinion I would rather not speculated on what is going to work or not because Rob and Mel have much experience in running this sort of campaign and I know that it is sometime frustrating for people when they are trying to rally people in support yet they stay at home or go to work because they have their own opinion, see what I mean? I can see that my posts have people thinking and just by reading the 2 posts above you can see people are working things out and are finding that you do not need money or a car because people will try to get you there That's what is so special about people in the movement ;D SPEAK organise these demos for a very good reason. My posts may be though provoking but not intimidating, nasty or insulting and lets face it they have people talking and it looks like one person at least is going to get to demos in the future Boll*x, I go to the SPEAK demo's tuvm.....

Yeah of course more people should turn out. My Boll*x comment was about you referring to the "above two posts" where u indicate that ur comments are making people think about going on more demo's. One of those post's were from me. I go on the demo's believe me.....

One of those post's were from me. I go on the demo's believe me..... The above 2 posts I refered to was more that it got people talking and if not for that then you wouldn't have known someone was having problem getting to demos. I should have made it a little more clearer. The 'do more thinking' was directed at people becoming more aware that others they are in regular contact with have problems getting themselves and others to demos. Now you two are aware?? I can see that my posts have people thinking and just by reading the 2 posts above you can see people are working things out and are finding that you do not need money or a car because people will try to get you thereThis is meant to mean you are able to talk and work out a solution for a person to get to demos,no?

Believe me, I would like to get to more demos, and shortly after going vegan I started going to the demos. Unfortunately several months ago, my mum was dxed with cancer and between working full time, looking after my 8 rescue animals......... One who is a severely ill 18 year old dog who can not be left for long and more or less being a carer for my mum who has just split up from my dad and therefore am having to go and look after her nearly every day due to her illness, mental health probs she has and her broken foot, I don't currently have enough hours in the day.
It isn't an excuse with me, or a get out clause, it's the simple truth. The only time I get on the pc anymore is when I'm at work and trying to get someone to swap shifts for a weekend off is pretty rare as they don't like doing favours.
I do hope that in some point in the future that I will be able to get back to some normality in my life and get back to going to demos etc, but I'm struggling to find time to get to my bed at the mo between dealing with my own furry friends and family issues.

Sounds like you are in need of help!! Have you enquired about some help with your situation? Your head must be in a right old pickle at the moment. Best wishes to your mother, our thoughts are with her.

Thanks Saucy and Vegan6pack. Unfortunately the mental health authorities have been little use and as for her physical health problems, she won't let anyone else other than family near her, but it will sort itself out eventually.
Anyway, I'm taking over the thread with something completely diferent here, so I'll shut up now!!!

Anyway, I'm taking over the thread with something completely diferent here, so I'll shut up now!!! I understand the situation. I wonder if you have a Mencap in your area? I used to work for them and the work I did was to help families who care for a family member with a mental/physical disability. I mainly worked with adults who suffered from MS at a wide range of stages and many of their parent were in there 50/60. It was designed in a way that when carers needed 'time out' from caring we would arrange an outing [to the pubs and clubs most of the time ] Sometimes it was just a couple of hours shopping or a football match but it was a god send for people who just wanted to sit down and relax. Might be worth looking into but it can be difficult I know. I became friends with a man called Steven who didn't like anyone helping him except him father but after a while spending time with him it was easier for us both when I started helping him with all his needs. It was a funny story really. We went out to a night club and Steve was going to stay at my flat for the night - I lived 4 flours up with no lift - we got back very drunk and I half carried half dragged us both up stairs both of us laughing all the way! When we got into the flat Steve was laughing so hard he was crying. Steve was hard enough to understand speach wise but in this state I couldn't understand what he was trying to say. He calmed down enough to say "that was the easy bit where's the toilet" we both went into a fit of laughter! I miss Steve he was a great bloke!

I'm going to jot Mencap an email. Thanks for that link. Not sure whether they deal with problems like psychosis........ which is what she's been dxed with but is definitely worth a try.
At the mo am trying to get her to take some activities with MIND, which is a similar type of organisation, but having a nightmare getting her to do anything like that.
That's a great story about Steve. Sounds like he was a nice guy. Must have been some pretty challenging work working for MENCAP and anyone that does that sort of work must have the patience of a saint!

Im really sorry to hear about your Mum Tigs, I agree that MIND and Mencap are well worth contacting for support, if they themselves cant help, then Im sure that they can head you in the right direction. Like Vegan6pack says if she can join in one of their activity days, it will give you some respite and time for yourself and give her more confidence to join in a little more. I know of a group of mentally/physically disabled people that have joined together in a self help kind of way, they also raise funds for animal rescue/welfare. They make dog coats, leads, blankets and all sorts really to sell to raise funds. They also have writing/reading/poetry groups , and gardening groups, so they share interests as well and helping each other. Another resource which may be worthwhile looking into is your local volunteers service, they cover a wide range of help and groups. I think a big step is accepting help outside of the family for some people. My Dad was very adamant he wouldnt have 'strangers' involved in his care. welcome to the forums btw Vegan6pack and I agree with Tigs, Steve sounds like he was a great bloke

At the risk of appearing to be a bit picky, I think its worth pointing out that Mencap is a learning disabilities charity, which is a very different issue to mental health.
Tigs, MIND is definitiely the appropriate group to go for, they're the country's leading mental health charity. The only other one is SANE but they are more for people with very serious MH conditions like schizophrenia and manic depression. Not to say that depression isn't serious of course, just to emphasise that MIND is the place to go IMO.

Mencap do work with people a range of disabilities who have learning difficulties including people who have physical disabilities. I also work with Steve while he was at collage. He went on to pass a degree in computer science and was far from having a mental handicap. This was all in the 1980s and things may have changed but I doubt it.

Looking at the Mencap site it certainally looks like they deal primarily in learning disabilities and only mention physical disabilty when stating that some people can suffer from both... perhaps they got their name from Mental Handicap... just guessing. I think MIND may be able to offer you some advice on how best to support your mum and yourself tigger. Sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time atm petal.

I think we can all agree that it is always best to knock on many doors? Back to the topic? At the time of writing the article below, solicitors for Oxford University are attempting to drag back to the High Court two prominent members of the SPEAK campaign. The pair is being threatened with heavy fines and imprisonment for daring to SPEAK the truth. We live in a supposed democracy, yet it is that very democracy which is banning people from SPEAKING OUT. Now more than ever, SPEAK needs the animal rights movement to show its support. Today it is SPEAK representatives facing jail – not for what they have done but for what they have said. No illegal act has been committed - their only crime is one of SPEAKING the Truth. Do nothing now and tomorrow it could be you they come for. www.speakcampaigns.org.uk/articles/20061024bully.phpNow we really do need to get behind the SPEAK campaign! If we allow SPEAK organizers to become isolated then we allow Oxford Uni to crush the campaign.

I will give both Mencap and Mind a try........... Will also see what else Mind can come up with except the keep fit classes they offered for her. I hadn't heard of Sane either Veggie. That also sounds like a possibility. Will see what I can find on Google for local contacts. Thanks for everyones support and wishes. Anyway, back on the subject............ I may (if work doesn't mess up my shifts) be able to get to one of the Thursday demos in the next week or so if they're still going. If so, does anyone know what they do about meeting up etc?
