Canadian Seal Slaughter Protest
Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London
Tuesday 19th September @ 12.00 midday
Save The Seals (UK) is very happy to announce that Canadian citizen and Miss United Kingdom 2005 - Brooke Johnston - will be attending and supporting this protest
Brooke was Miss United Kingdom in 2005 and only handed her crown back in June this year. Born and raised in Canada and then moved to the UK, vegetarian Brooke, said:
"I'm moved by any act of animal cruelty, but the images from Canada's seal cull are particularly disturbing. I am happy to see that organisations like Save the Seals are able to show the world the inhumanity that is happening in this most remote location.
I'm proud to be Canadian because it is a country that is kind, polite, respects nature,
and puts what is morally right over what is economically right. The hunt is the opposite of what it means to be Canadian. It shocks me to know that Canada's government is condoning these actions".
This is a very important protest as a full Media Release is being circulated. There will be a visual display, symbolising the killing of baby seals. Please make every effort to attend and once again add your voice in protest to this sickening act of cruelty!
MAJOR TURNING POINT IN CAMPAIGN RECEIVES OUTBURST FROM CANADIAN FISHERIES MINISTER!
Dr Caroline Lucas MEP (UK) and Carl Schlyter MEP (Sweden) have co-sponsored a declaration to ban the import of Harp and Hooded seal products into the European Union. This has been officially adopted by the European Parliament. The European Commission will now draft legislation that will implement the ban.
The ban will have a significant impact on the Canadian seal slaughter and this has provoked a venomous attack by Canadian Fisheries Minister, Loyola Hearn. Hearn said that he is prepared to “wage a war” to protect the Atlantic seal hunt. “Hearn is declaring war on all Canadian citizens who are opposed to the killing. He is declaring war against the European Parliament and against international organisations opposed to the killing of seals.” Said Captain Paul Watson, of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The full report is available on the Sea Shepherd website: www.seashepherd.org/news/media_060908_1.html
A quote by Mahatma Gandhi, often used by the animal rights and conservation movements is: "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." Loyola Hearn has now said that he's now fighting us. We know what the next stage will be!
PLEASE BE THERE FOR THE SEALS!
