In September 2005, South Devon Greyhound Action (SDGA) organised a sponsored walk to commemorate
Greyhound Planet week. As this was such a successful and popular event S.D.G.A. have decided to do
the walk again this year.
The sponsored walk from Dartington to Staverton and back again (approx.3 miles) will start outside
Cranks Restaurant at the Cider Press Centre in Dartington near Totnes on Sunday 17th September 2006
at 12pm. We really hope that you will be able to join us for this enjoyable afternoon.
Greyhound Planet Week is an international event held every year in honour of the Greyhound and its
relatives (Galgos, Lurchers, etc.) throughout the world and helps to raise the public's awareness
about the status of these beautiful dogs.
South Devon Greyhound Action is part of the national Greyhound Action campaign to ban greyhound
racing due to the thousands of dogs that are destroyed and discarded every year by the greyhound
racing industry.
The sponsored walk is a fund-raising event to help support our campaign and some of the monies
raised will also go towards rescuing unwanted greyhounds. Last years' event raised a total of
£1172.70 which enabled S.D.G.A. to give a generous donation to Greyhound Action UK in support of the
national campaign. We were also able to give a donation to Greyhound Rescue West of England towards
their dedicated rescue work.
If you would like to take part in this fun event, then please join us outside Cranks Restaurant at
the Cider Press Centre in Dartington near Totnes at 12 noon. The Centre which is made up of several
little shops is very easy to find and is situated just off the A385 (Ashburton Road) in the
Dartington Village approximately 1½ miles from Totnes. Free parking is provided at the Cider Press
Centre and there are also refreshment and toilet facilities.
The walk itself takes us through woodlands via country lanes and footpaths and includes a beautiful
riverside walk which runs alongside the Staverton steam railway. You may wish to bring along your
camera or binoculars as this really is a beautiful spot and you may even catch a glimpse of a heron
or kingfishers that often frequent this part of the river.
After a short relaxing break beside the river, we make our return journey to the Cider Press Centre
where our walk ends and you can finally put your feet up. If you have worked up an appetite on the
walk there is a 'Cranks' veggie restaurant at the centre and tables and chairs are provided outside.
Please do bring your rescued dogs to this event as they will love it and are more than welcome.
(Please don’t forget your poopa scoop).
(We feel that this is a moderately easy walk which is mostly on the level with a couple of slight
gradients).
