Saturday 30th September 2006
The most important thing to tell you is that the INCARCERATED ANIMALS day originally listed for 23rd Sept has now been changed to the 30th Sept.
All the other details remain the same, ie. Meet in Preston Park at 1pm (right on the A23, about 1 mile down from the big roundabout as you enter Brighton from the bypass and/or A23). Those wanting to set up stalls should get there at 12 noon.
We already have 3 speakers lined up but would welcome any from groups directly dealing with 'incarcerated animals' in whichever area of animal exploitation that may be - food, fur, game shoot breeding, pet trade, aquaria, vivisection etc etc. Please let us know asap and we will list you on the new leaflet which we hope to get out in the next fortnight.
The rally will be followed by a march through Brighton ending at the Palace Pier and from there it's only a short walk to the Brighton Unemployed Centre where there will be cheap, vegan food made by Brighton Animal Action's chef!
We hope to make this a really big day and it would be helpful if you could let us know if you plan to come and also give us a vague idea of numbers from your area so we can plan the food. The route has already been agreed with the police so we don't forsee any Section 12/14 problems.
Whilst the essence of the Rally will be lively, the theme of the march will be one of remembrance and re-dedication, in as much as it will be a ‘silent procession through the streets of Brighton. Would-be speakers are invited to apply to give a speech of no longer than five minutes duration for consideration (to prevent reiteration of any particular interest).
For maximum effect; all participants are requested to wear dark clothing. Individual groups may prefer to simply wear all-black dress, which is perfectly acceptable. However, when a similar demonstration (numbering about 4,000 animal rights folk) was enacted in Brighton during the early 1990’s, the majority preferred to dress in ‘Victorian’ fashion i.e.; hatted women wearing full length dresses, all bearing a bouquet of (plastic) flowers, whilst top-hatted (hats made from cardboard and painted with emulsion) men carried either a symbolic white cross, a flag, or a mourning (black-edged) poster, and the whole cavalcade was very impressive. Whitened faces are also optional but they too would appear quite dramatic and accentuate the theme of the exercise. Bouquets, Flags and Posters will be distributed in Preston Park, prior to the cortege moving off.
Specialist National and Regional animal rights/welfare groups, or regional coalitions, against any form of animal incarceration, are invited to employ a float in the procession, depicting their’ interest in a particular form of incarcerated abuse. Demonstrators who ignore the request to dress as prescribed will be relegated to the end of the procession.
The ‘Period of Dedication’ event will be an ‘after burial’ ceremony, to be conducted on the lower promenade adjacent to the east of Brighton Pier, where, one-at-a-time, a representative of every participating organisation will place a cross into the ‘ground’ of a large mock-up of a grave. An alternative site has been suggested to the Brighton Constabulary whereby the procession would disband at the forecourt to Brighton Pier and the event be enacted in situ.
At the end of these proceedings, demonstrators will be encouraged to visit Brighton Unemployed Centre, Tilbury Place, Brighton (maps will be provided), for a very-low-cost vegan meal, consisting of couscous and side salad. There will be provision for 24 stalls and a video show during the late afternoon and early evening. Consumption of alcoholic beverages will not be allowed. Brighton Unemployed Centre is situated a 15 minute walk from the pier.
The rally will begin promptly at 1.30pm. At 2.15pm the procession will move off, with the intention, at this point in time, of following the traditional route to the West Pier, via Beaconsfield Road, London Road, Richmond Place, Grand Parade, Old Steine, Castle Square, North Street, Western Road, Montpelier Road, and turning east towards Brighton Pier, where it will disband - Incidentally, - a similar Brighton demonstration, held in the late 80’s, found latecomers frantically trying to catch up to the main concourse (which set off on time) - with skirts held high, flower bouquets visibly disintegrating and progress constantly hindered in the retrieving of top hats on a windy day, the poor things looked a somewhat unseemly sight for such a sombre event - Don’t let it happen to you!
As a donation towards the cost of the whole event, a charge of £25.00 is requested from all organisations where employed labour maintains the association. As BAA are not seeking to make monetary gain from the enterprise, within one calendar month of the event, any monies found to be surplus to the expense requirements of the exercise will, if requested, be returned to the fee payers on an equal basis. However, at this point in time, additional donations will be very welcome. The charge entitles a society to enter a float into the parade and a stall in the hall. - For special interest groups entirely maintained by volunteers, the charge is waived for both entering a float and a stall in the hall. Smaller animal rights groups who wish only to participate in the proceedings are especially welcome.
