Erm, 2 and a half months now, so not long at all. The other one, me finks is just over 2 years.
Have just started advertising on page one of the sponsored links of the search engines such as aol, google and yahoo, so if you type in veganism, vegan forum, vegan forums or vegan messageboards this place will come up on page one.......... Yay!
As for vegan etc and vegan recipes, its a few pages down, but since advertising the members are slowly but surely creeping in.
Also am on a few links in vegan friendly websites such as the brill Tower Hill Stables... so we're getting there. Hopefully by summer we should have double what we have now!

It's your dodgy Oz land Google, Geoff!
Should be there somewhere as subscribed to all countries, but doesn't seem to be there. Bizarre. Will email the powers that be, as have paid out for everywhere.
Had only checked the .co.uk and the .com versions and they had appeared to be ok. Wonder how many other counties it hasn't appeared in??? Wierd.

I like this forum better than the other forums I go on and its great that you're allowed to say "I support the ALF" without being banned ;D I only joined yesterday, BTW thanks for the link Tiggerwoo The only downside is I've spent too much time today trying to catch up on all the interesting posts instead of cleaning my house

Yes, this is a good forum with one or two bad points.
What's this fastchat thing? Not every member knows about that thread and not every member has been invited. I am not interested in it because I think I know what it is - a continuation of a thread that has now disappeared from the list of threads. I only know about it now because I saw reference to it in the 'Welcome' thread. Not everyone reads that. I haven't for the past few weeks due to lack of time. Every member of a forum should be welcomed and treated like the others. There shouldn't be secret threads that some are excluded from or not told about. Vegans can feel isolated and excluded enough from much of what the general public do but they shouldn't be made to feel that way by fellow vegans. We should be trying to encourage people, not putting up barriers.

The fast chat section is where all the chatty stuff goes on between regulars (could have sworn I sent you an invite). Tiggs created it as an area where people can babble away and it won't show up on the 'last 70 posts' function as people were complaining that the chat threads were taking it over. It's invitation only as it's password protected so people can be open without fear of being lurked by dubvious characters, which we know has happened here before. It is offered to regular members to prohibit people coming to EV purely to chat and not support other sections on the forum. Also, by giving people the chance to familarise themselves themselves with the rest of the forum as to the atmosphere it reduces the chance of problems in the chat area where people are more relaxed. The members of the origional thread were asked to post more on other threads, which they did & Admin created the 'fast chat' section for them & others who support the forum. I doubt too many people would take offence at 1 section out of 18 being hidden. Anyone who wishes to ask about the section are free to do so publicly (as you have G) or by PMing Admin or Mods. If any of the regular members haven't been sent an invite it was merely due to an oversight & anyone who feels this might apply to them is welcome to contact Admin or Mods.

Thanks Feral. Sorry you didn't feel you were invited Gliondrach. As Feral stated I was getting complaints left, right and centre because of the chat thread making it hard to view other topics, so after some thought, moved it to a subscription section, so those who wish to can post there and put a sticky post up about it here a while ago. everythingvegan.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1141078211Hopefully it has worked for everyone, but feel free to join us if you like, PM Feral or I for the password, the more, the merrier.

At the risk of sounding like one of those brown nosing VF posters I have to say that this solution is about as good as its going to get. As Fezza says, the chat was taking over a bit and the rest of the forum was being neglected. On the other hand I don't think stopping the chat altogether worked either cos I know some people do want just that from a forum. And I was a bit dubious about some people joining then making a couple of posts before complaining, suspect that some of them may have been trolls in reality.
All forums have a 'members only' section. I've seen at least one other that says you can only post in that once you've got 100 posts.
Now the rest of the forum is gadding about most healthily and I certainly make a bit more effort lloking at the other threads first, although not sure whether thats just cos Tigs was obviously unhappy about them being ignored. But whatever, I think the place has a pretty good balance of chatty stuff and important stuff.
Only prob as I can see is that, yes someone could be forgotton, which would probably be a little distressing. Maybe the admin should take notes when new members join and diary in their invite? ;D (spot the manager)
You can't please all the people all of the time, I think the current solution is pretty good, who knows things may have to change again if the membership gets a lot bigger.

I did actually speak to someone who joined and then was put off by all the chatting and flirting. She only occasionally goes on the forums, so chat stuff wouldn't be of use to her, anyway.
I'd love to bitch and moan about her being a troll or something, but she's actually a good friend, so I have to think she is being reasonable.
I might see if she'll come back now most of the chat is tidied away.

Will certainly keep an eye on newbies joining Veggie and once they're familiar and posting will inform them. (Have PMed the majority of them already) Thanks Veggie!
