As I think I told a few of you, I'd submitted this site to the various search engines such as Google, but from what I've read it doesn't guarantee a site to be put in a web directory and it can take weeks or months and of course.......... we need members! So yesterday afternoon I found a company on line that I paid to submit this place into 1550 search engines including Google, Ask Jeeves, Lycos and all the biggies. They claim to have the site listed to the public within 48 hours, but how close to the front page we'll be I don't know. So anyway folks, besides you spreading the word! Any other tips for promoting this place....... the dafter the better please! ;D

That's true. I submitted mine a while ago, and though I see a spider or two every day, I don't see my site when I search using my keywords. I know someone who paid $90 a month to ensure that her site appeared in the sponsored links section of every page of a given search. I do not want to pay that much!

Thats alot of money! I couldn't justify that either and I think alot of people overlook the sponsored ad section, I know I do as it tends to be sales really.
I've heard of alot of people having to submit their sites several times, so maybe that will help?

I think that as my site grows I will be adding new search words. When I was looking for smilies I got a lot of smilie lists from other forums which had extensive smilie collections as I do. When someone searches for smilies they will be directed to my forum then. So as I add features to my forum I will add the search words, and that should help. Although, most of my members are not very anxious to be flooded with new people! They like the quiet atmosphere.

True, I know what you mean....... its nice having a smaller forum, it makes it a bit more personal. Also a lot of the members I think we get are word of mouth.

OK, the good news and the bad news....... the good news is that this mad place seems to have finally shown up as of today in Google, MSN search etc..... the bad news is I don't know what has happened but the only way to get the forum to appear up on the search engine is to type everything vegan, rather than vegan forum, chat, recipes, soya and all the other keywords I put in for the meta tags....... Not much help that is, so will be contacting the company that submitted it again tomorrow.....Arrrgh, the mind boggles! LOL

Well I know I mentioned earlier that I couldn't justify spending a load of money on a sponsored link page, but when the company I paid to submit the site to search engines kept making loads of mistakes and sticking this place in the wrong category and then completely disappearing, and I got an email ad sent to me saying that I could have advertise on the sponsored links for as little as one month, I thought to get a few more people, so it becomes quite a lively forum would stick an ad on for a month or so, then remove it when I manage to get the normal link back in so I won't have to pay out each month.
Think they should have done it for free though as its a good cause and I'm not a business but they didn't see it that way! LOL

Sorry didn't see that one. We're on Vegan Family House and I've contacted Vegan Village twice, but they never got bk to me (checks under armpits for smell!)
Strangest thing is we didn't appear on Google and the other top search engines page one, this month as my debit card details changed and they didn't add the site in time, so will be bk on there later in the wk when the system updates, but we got more members than we get when we are advertising, which is bizarre.
Maybe all you folks are spreading the good word?!

Nah........... Don't really want them TBH. Started this place of as a hobby, so don't really want to go starting a donations section. Will accept donations in the form of cakes though! ;D

Ok, this might sound a bit cheeky, but being a new year it's time to get more members in.
I can't really justify spending £55 a month on the advertising I was doing on Google till about 4 or 5 months ago as it was only getting in a couple of members a month, but if anyone has a Myspace a/c, website, journal etc, if you want to put the link somewhere on your profile to hopefully start drumming the trade in again, that would be great.
Luvs ya all!
Also I'm thinking of doing a banner that will link straight to this site, but have no ideas how to go about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You could put a banner (and a button) on the main page, with the html code next to it, so that people can use it as a link.
The html code should be:
<a href="http://everythingvegan.proboards59.com/index.cgi"><img src="http://everythingvegan.co.uk/banner.jpg"></a>
This code will mean that if someone puts the banner or button on their site, the image displayed will be the one hosted here. If you would rather not use up your bandwidth in that way, you could ask them to copy the image and put it on their own site instead.
The most common size for buttons is 88 x 31 pixels.

shouldn't cost to submit to search engines.
what makes you come up on searches is having enough other sites linked to you.
google offer a service, can't remember exact name, where you pay per click and can set a daily weekly or monthly budget which could be really low, if there's no clicks you don't pay and if there are lots of clicks and your budget is used up your ad just disappears for a while.

addme.com/will submit your site to at least 15 search engines free of charge.

Thanks for all your ideas folks and the banner idea Sluggie.
Have tried all the stuff like "addme" AC, but the problem is that although the site will show, it comes up about a million pages down the list in google, even by adding the correct meta tags, so it seems like I'm a bit stuck.
Gonna work at designing a banner anyway for people to stick as a link on their signatures and myspaces if they would like to.
