Basically Lavendar, yes , thats pretty much the thing.
Microwaving cooks food in a completely different way to normal cooking, in that the microwaves pretty much cook at least partly from within, as opposed to direct heat cooking methods which cook by applying heat from the outside.
Fr has a point in that microwaving liquids can be dangerous, in that the liquid can develop a 'superheated layer' below the surface. This is usually down to badly designed microwaves, the result of this is that you think your cup of coffee is nicely warmed up, you stir it with your spoon and the superheated layer comes up to the top, gushing steam and scolding you. Mind you this trait was exposed on Tomorrow's World in about 1992 (I think) so I suspect the microwave manufacturers have probably sorted this one by now.
I'm sure there are some potential dangers with microwaves, especially the early ones which weren't well sealed so standing in front of them meant that you got cooked too. But Russian studies from 1957 probably aren't that relevant any more cos the screening has been improved since then. And anyway, I always stand in the lounge wrapped in tin foil when I use mine.
So like I said, burnt toast has been linked with cancer but I still eat toast like a trooper. I'm sure there is a tiny risk from microwaves too, esp if they're not made properly but I doubt that risk is all that significant in the grand scheme of things.
If you don't like the way that micrawaves 'cook' food don't use them. But in risk assessment terms they're really not a problem. And if I was worried about stomach cancer I'd stop drinking alcohol first. Especially as that would prob help my ADD ;D
