I got a newsletter from BUAV the other day and there was a large piece on Body Shop, encouraging consumers not to boycott them. The main message seems to be that L'oreal are so ethical for buying Body Shop...I kinda see it as Body Shop are money hungry and unethical. Being as Body Shops profits now go to fund L'oreals animal testing, I'll continue to boycott them as many others will, and found BUAVs support rather odd!

Hmmmmmmmm......... That's a very good point.
Maybe they are thinking along the lines of anyone buying products that aren't tested on animals is better than buying standard stuff, but I also will still be boycotting them. Infact my trade has gone over to Lush and have noticed their shops becoming alot busier.

I've worked for both Body Shop and Lush and the differences are quite surprising-I worked at BS in 2004 and basically was told that BS wanted a new 'prestigious image as a premium brand' and to 'get rid of the cheap soap briggade'. The products are full of chemicals and I don't think anything was vegan. Wheras about 75% of lushs products are vegan, use minimal packaging and chemicals, have probably the best policy on animal testing, and I hope, will never sell to a big company then hide behind an 'ethical' faccade. Sorry to go off on one! But yes ,very confused by BUAVs enthusiasm for Body Shop, I think the only people buying the 'ooh isnt that lovely of Loreal' idea are clueless media people.

Body Shop stopped guaranteeing that any of their products were animal free a while ago unfortunately.
Original Source is another option, but owned by Cussons I believe.

Yeah I noticed Original Source don't have the cute little bit on the back about how the company started anymore, I think it still has the 'not tested on animals/no synthetic materials' bit though

original source have the vegan society mark on them too.
I emailed PZ Cussons a while back and asked them about there Animal testing and they replied with a simple no they dont test their products on animals.
Wasnt really helpful!
So even though the Original source stuff is vegan I still dont want to buy it as I know the money is going to a parent company that do test

I know what you mean. Until recently I had bought Original Source in an emergency when we had run out of something and were in the supermarket rather than a health food shop with loads of choice, but have now stocked well and truly up on Lush stuff.
Went to the Guildford branch last week and bought a load of shampoos, soaps, massage bars, deodorant etc........ MMMMMMM!

I love Lush
I recently went to the covent garden shop - it was the birthday and they even had the founder of Lush there answering questions and offering advice to people
I ended up spending loads of money in there. They even had there staff outside promoting that there stuff was cruelty free

Catnip, I emailed Cussons via their website and got an identical one liner reply. I've emailed them back pinning them down a bit ie nowhere in the world, def no ingredients nor products, suppliers etc... Had asked them in the original email but they seemed to forget that bit.
When I wandered into the Lush shop the other day I thought I'd ended up in a cake shop by mistake! Its a bit confuddling for those not used to their way of doing things. I bought a lump of soap though.

it is a bit overwhelming and very strong smelling
I also emailed ET Browne who do Palmers Cocoa Butter as I used to love using it - and I got the same sort of reply.
It is so easy for them to palm us off or try anyway

I used to like the Body Shop products and awhile ago I used to like L'Oreal. Bah. Why can't companies do the right thing???

Bah. Why can't companies do the right thing??? Because making money means more to them than doing the right thing...unfortunately

I've never heard of Cusson before, are they a brand I should add to my boycott list? If so why?
Going back to The Body Shop, for those that don't know L'oreal are half owned by the evil Nestle too, so another reason to boycott The Body Shop.
I will always boycott the body shop now regardless of what the BUAV say.

oh poop, i bought some original source shower gel today as it had the vegan society logo on the back and said that it was not animal tested on it! I thought that they couldn't get the VS logo unless they were cruelty free?

It means that the product is cruelty-free, although the company that owns it may not be. Some people are of the opinion that we should buy the vegan options from non-vegan companies to encourage them to produce more cruelty-free goods.
I think this makes sense, though given the choice, I would rather support a small ethical company than a large unethical or semi-ethical one.

Lush do have an excellent policy on animal testing, however one major gripe is that they still use lanolin in some their products.
Annoying, given that there are vegetable based alternatives to lanolin. Also I feel use of lanolin undermines their anti-cruelty stance.

They use honey and beeswax in some products too. The good thing about lush though is that the vegan stuff is clearly labelled and most of the time you can a vegan option in each range!
