Useful site, although based in the UK, very helpful for working out those tricky products you aren't quite sure whether are vegan or not. www.isitvegan.info

Ive just had a conversation with a lady at the gym who assures me that Nivea (or the company that makes Nivea) has been cruelty free for about 5 years. I didnt think this was true, but does anyone know anything about it.

I don't know. I keep hearing conflicting information about Nivea so it would be good to know one way or the other. I went to their site but it states nothing there about non animal testing or vegan ingredients.

Regarding the Isitvegan? site...if you have something you know is vegan and you have an email to prove it, please go to the site and contact them via the email given so they can add to the list.

Hi, I wrote to Nivea recently and they replied quote 'Ingredients used in the Nivea/Atrixo/Eucerin range are, whereever possible, from non-animal sources such as vegetable based Glycerin. However there are specific materials where an effective alternative is not readily available, for example:' They then go on to list a variety of ingredients from sheep wool, tallow, bee, fish, silk worm and even milk. So, I really don't think a lot of their products are suitable. I have recently been using more and more 'Simple' products. They state on their products that they contain no animal ingredients, although there is one moisturizer that has beeswax in it , so is unsuitable.

I haven't contacted them direct yet, but I read that they didn't test. There is so much conflicting information, with one source saying a company doesn't test and another one saying it does. It would put your head away!

Hi, me again, I'm nearly certain Simple don't test on animals. I can't remember where I got my information, but I am always careful when finding information like this out. I have numerous letters from companies I have contacted in the past, so I'm nearly certain the information I got was that they don't test. Having said this, I have just emailed the company direct and as soon as I get a reply I will let you know. What confuses me though, is that different sources say different things. What do you think about Tesco cosmetics etc, they state that they don't test. I am at present waiting on a reply to a letter I sent to Tesco asking about ingredients in their products. I seem to spend a lot of time contacting companies, I just wish all products could be labelled vegan or non-vegan, but that would be too good to be true!

Have just done a bit of research, good old Google and turns out Johnson & Johnson are still sadly testing. www.jnj.com/community/policies/animal_testing/animal_testing.htmWill try find out the exact policy for Tesco's for you. The only supermarket I think that makes it nice and clear for everyone is the Co op as all are BUAV approved, most are vegan, and if it isn't it will state it on the packaging for you.

Tesco's Animal Testing Policy Please let me assure you that Tesco do not conduct any testing on animals, nor do we commission any tests, or allow our product manufacturers to conduct such tests on our behalf. We fully support elimination and alternatives to animal testing. Our policy states, with reference to the historical testing of ingredients, and the possibility of future statutory testing on animals, that while it is a fact that some ingredients have, at some point in their development, been tested on animals, it is only to satisfy the legislation of public health and hygiene. These tests, however, have not been carried out for or endorsed by Tesco Stores Ltd. It is impossible for us to distinguish which products may or may not be singled out for future testing by the government, as fundamentally, all product ingredients may subject to this. We do not have a 'fixed-cut-off-date' for discontinuing ingredients that have been tested on animals, as we do not allow our suppliers, nor do we ourselves conduct testing on animals. Therefore, we are not currently introducing new ingredients or products tested on animals. Our suppliers are currently following our code of practice on animal testing that simply states that products and their ingredients must not be tested on animals for Tesco Stores Ltd. Furthermore, we are a major financial contributor to FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experimentation), an organisation that promotes the safe testing of products, but not on animals. Kind regards Kelly Smith, Customer Service Manager

Are Johnson and Johnson responsible for Simple products, I thought it was Accantia, or are they one and the same? Tesco's response sounds promising, I think companies with this attitude should be encouraged as it can only lead to better things.

I remember seeing some at my parents house a year or so again and it was Johnson and Johnson then. Maybe it has been purchased by Accantia??? Off to do some more investigating for you!

Thanks, I am happy that Simple products are suitable for vegans. They also said that, 'should further research be required, non-animal testing techniques are employed'. It also states clearly on their product that they contain no animal ingredients, so I think if they are wanting to state that fact they would be less likely to test on animals.

Yeah. They are owned by PZ Cussons though, so they aren't so great in that respect.
I wasn't all that keen on their stuff, anyway. I use Faith in Nature stuff now (which is more organic and less chemically as well). I use Jason deodorant stick.
Used to use Tom's of Maine deodorant, but they were bought by Colgate Palmolive. Possibly as a side effect more Jason products seem to be available.
Jason and Faith in Nature aren't cheap, but it's still only a few pennies per day.

Sandra, you need to know that Simple Soap definitely, 100% certainly, contains sodium tallowate which is derived from animal fat and so not even vegetarian let alone vegan! So please steer clear of that if not from any other Simple products! It is on their own website at www.simple.co.ukMost of their soaps contain this horrible stuff from dead animals as the main ingredient. I would not trust them if they cannot do something so basic as to switch over to vegetable fat as a soap base as many companies have done already (even the Body Shop who are not a totally veggie company did this years ago). At least one of the Simple shampoos contains honey too. I've not had time to go through all their products but you can look for yourself at this on the site, they list all the ingredients when you ask to look at any given product. To be honest, I don't think they have much of a clue on the vegan or animal testing issues as they don't even state anything about not testing on animals on their website anyway, which is the perfect place to state their policy clearly if it is any good. I know from checking it in a shop that the tallow ingredient is clearly stated on the soap, Lesley
